Have you ever gone to a real estate open house?

I am a real estate agent and have to sit at an open house this Sunday as a favor for a friend. I have not been "active" for almost a year and a half since I've been able to stay at home with my kids (which i like way more!)
I have always wondered what people think when they go to an open house - do you need to buy a house or are you just bored and stopping by? Do you hate giving the agent your information? Do you think agents are sleazy? Do you say you like a house when you really hate it?
Ao anyway, if you've been to an open house, I'd love to hear your experiences and opinions of them!!

My daughter and her husband have been to several and I have heard her say different times it was just a joke. They have always bought from resal estate but this time they're going to buy private. I sold my house at the city with Remax Real Estate in 1999, I was told all kinds of crap like the house was in a poor neighbourhood, although the house was spotless and in very good condition it would have to sell for less because the basement wasn't a finished basement. I had put a new furnace in, shingled the roof when it was time and I kept up the mintenance. I was going to get married and because my husband was changing jobs at a different town it meant I had to move and because I didn't have a lot of money I was scared to rent to a stranger in case it resulted in repairs and goodness knows what all. I put it on the market first with Caldwell Banker. The Real Estate agent had an open house which did zero good. She bought a box of dounuts and she had company there to share the dounuts then she told me there wasn't any interest in my house. I was later told my agent sucked at her job so that's when I turned to Remax Realty. It sold fast and all I got was forty thousand dollars and it later sold for 110,000.00. I will never deal with Real Estate again as long as I live. We bought this place privately in October 1999. We will never loose a dime on this house that is a quarantee. Sorry I'm so negative towards real estate and I guess if you choose to rate me a - there's nothing I can do but I wanted to answer your post and I feel good about myself knowing I told the truth and not just something I would expect you would like to hear. If you're like all the other people on my friends list then I know you are a very good person but I'm sorry I have a bad taste in my mouth for Realtors. Thanks.

It sounds like you really have had some awful ones!!! There are over 800 agents in the market wherre i live - I would say out of that 800 maybe 40 actually know what they are doing!! It is scary how many are running around!! It took me 2 years to really know what I was doing and by then I was sick of getting client calls at midnight & on holidays - now I just do part-time assistant stuff...which is more than enough for me!! Hopefully your future real estate experiences will be better!!

I don't like agents who are really persistent and always out in their way to make a sale and close the deal. There are cases before when I accompanied my friends to survey a particular estate and the agents would be hiding something.
Like there was this particular house which I found out that it used to belong to a family who had moved out because of haunting occasions and the agent made no comments about that.
But on the other hand, there are agents whom are extremely nice, friendly and hardworking. I love real estate agents whom have done their homework and know their work/stuff. I go for these kinds anytime. And one more thing I like would be how they make their commission. I admire them for making such large commissions, really.

I've gone to open houses for a number of reasons. One was when a house in our neighborhood had an open house and the neighbors all trooped through to take a look. Before that, I went through quite a number of open houses when we were starting out looking for a house to buy - I wanted to get an idea of what was selling in the area for how much. A lot of these homes were new builder homes as well.
I'm the type of person that doesn't like to talk to salespeople until I'm ready and hate to be pressured. I know the agents really should keep an eye on the people going through the homes for theft purposes, so I don't mind them along. I am generally noncommittal, but usually find something nice to say unless it's really bad and then I'd tell them what I didn't like.

Lol, I've always gotten a few "nosy neighbors" so that seems normal to me!! I am as laid back as laid back gets at an open house...i'll show them around or whatever to make sure they're not emptying the medicine cabinets but I've never been pushy...usually people act like a deer in headlights though if i ask them if they like the house or if they were thinking about moving into the area, lol...they're so afraid i'm going to be like every other real estate agent they ever met i guess!

I have never went to an open house I have had a realtor show me houses I am interested in. I have thought about going to open houses just to see what the inside of some of them look like but some realtors want way to much of your personal info just because you looked at the house.

sometimes they want it for security purposes in case something should go missing - others want it solely to harass you to work with them. i do it just for the first reason :)

Yeah I've been to real estate open house but not as a prospective buyer. My relatives who happened to manage people in real estate industry invited me to come along with them when they had an open house. I was staying at their place while I was waiting for my visa. They tour me so I would maybe interest to join them. It was fun roaming around different houses and drooled to the prices. The houses were so nicely made and that gave me an idea of what should my dream house looks like.

it is good to check them out from time to time - it is fun to see as many houses as you can all at once!

I have been to a few open houses and I have gone more out of boredom than anything. I like to see what other houses look like and how they are decorated, to give me some ideas of doing mine. I have never gone to an open house with the intention of buying one. I have sold a couple of my houses by having an open house and someone coming in and putting in an offer. So I think that open houses do work, although it also attracts people that are just looking out of curiousity or whatever.
