How much did your car insurance jump when you added a 16 year boy?

I am in Florida, and our insurance jumped to $4350 a year just to cover HIM for 3 cars! For just my husband and I it was $2600 a year. 2 of the vehicles are fully insured and my sons truck has the minimum insurance. Am I getting bent over or is this standard??

I have never added any teenagers! It is traditional in our family for the teenager to pay his own insurance if he wants to drive! It is common for males to pay a lot more for insurance until he turns twenty-five years old! Why do you have to sign him up for all the cars? Why not just his?

He is paying us monthly for his insurance.. but this is INSANE. I am not sure he can get his own policy as he is only 16... I could be wrong though. I think bevcause we added him on to our insurance they HAD to add himm to all 3 cars. I think I will take off at 3 and take my KY down and talk to my agent.

You can ask about taking him off two of the cars! You are probably saving him money, if he was buying his own without you it would be much worse! It is the highest paying age group because of all the accidents they have! You can get a good student discount if your grade point average is 3.0! Also a bigger discount if you took a driving class!

I would die if that was my insurance rate. I remember when my husband added me to his policy since I only became a "licensed" driver after I got married. He was insuring an RX-7 and my Civic LX and we only paid $246 a month for full coverage for both vehicles even with me being a new driver, but I was 20 years old. My 19 year old step brother with 3 points on his license was inquiring about insurance rates because I refuse to add him to my policy and getting the minimum required by PA state law is going to cost him $220 a month just for him. I would ask your insurance agent if it would be cheaper just to add him as a driver to one car only that he will be the primary driver of. That might save you a couple of bucks because an almost $2000 jump does seem a little excessive. I would carry some KY with you when you go to see your insurance agent. You might not get a kiss afterwards but you can at least try to ease the chaffing.

LOL on the KY That's EXACTLY the way I feel. After I posted I realized I didn't say it was ans ADDITIONAL $4,000 a year.. so my rate almost tripled. I think because we added him on our policy they HAD to insure him for all 3 calls... IDK.. I am so confused I guess I will have to get off early today to deal with it.. Thanks for the laugh

Our insurance was about $100 a month more when we added my son. They put him on the oldest car and that kept it down a little, multi-car discount, safe driving record and the good grade discount. He's 24 now and has his own policy on his car - with good coverage, he pays about $70 a month - I can't believe it's that good a rate. Nevada has extremely high insurance rates - ours doubled when we moved here and thank goodness I don't have to insure him.

I am in an insurance agent for Washington, Idaho, and Oregon. I am not familiar with Florida state rules, but I can tell you what affects the rates and how to help; maybe. I personally am with State Farm and have been for 9 years; I also added my son to my policy and it increased $1800 for the year. You need to know a few things that might be helpful. First of all most companies rate the highest rated car with the highest rated driver; which would be your son. Try to keep his record clean. Rates are based on where you live (zip code), who's in the household, financial responsiblity (credit), prior insurance liability limits, ages, type of cars, coverage, and driving records. If he only drives his car and never drives your cars you may be able to put a policy in your name and list him as a driver and list his car. I do not know if your current insurance company will allow you to exclude him or not, but its worth a try to save you money. You should also check around every 6 months to a year for better rates. Just because you have been with one company for a long time does not mean you are getting a good rate, and you do not owe your agent anything by being loyal. Insurance is expensive and the economy is not so good right now; you could save 20 to 50 per month why not try. Try to get your home, auto, life and such with the same company for good rates, see if your company offers good student discounts- have your son work to help out (my son works for Sonic-burger joint and pays his own insurance) Also some companies are not so bad with teen drivers; such as Safeco- Good credit helps too!! Good luck and hope it helps a little.

I have a thought for you to make it easier; maybe. Go online to sites like Netquote.com or Insureme.com, etc. Fill in your information for you and your son with his truck only. Do not provide your phone number if you rather not talk to people, but list an email. You may get bombarded with quotes so it is up to you if you want to use an email you always use or set up a new simple one for this. I know Nationwide will not allow a seperate policy, but they may let you exclude him if you show you have found coverage for him elsewhere. As for the grades I understand. I require no lower than C's from all of my kids. C's are average and that works for me. Take care and good luck.

Thank you! That helped me understand a lot better. Nationwide is who i am with, they won't allow me to just insure him with his truck. I don't have the time, or energy to shop around. When I try to get quotes on line (including state farm) it tells me I have to call an agent. He does pay for part of his insurance, but I really don't think its fair to make him pay ALL of his insurance. When the summertime comes, he will take drivers ed.. that will help. As for his grades..... MEH.. he is a C student, and although he COULD do better, I am happy that he's making C's instead of D's and F's
