Get your rice...while you can...

If you have been following the news, you know rice is in trouble. There are now restrictions on how much rice people can buy in certain stores. I know I plan on stocking up, rice is a staple in my diet and I have no intention of not having it in the house until there is no more to be had. What are your thoughts on how the rice problem is going. Ainge

Wow! I didn't know that. Of course, since I had kids, if it isn't announced on or by Sponge Bob, I never know what's going on. Do you know of anything else concerning this issue? Like, why there's a shortage of rice? I thought rice was one of the most abundant foods in the world? I mean, there's a site, freerice.com, that donates free rice to hungry people all over the world. (basically, you go to the site, they give you words and a multiple choice for the definition of said words. For every word you get right, the site donates twenty grains of rice, through the UN, I believe, to hungry people). So, if they're giving it away (in abundance, last I checked the site), I have to wonder why the news is saying there is such a shortage. I'm going to have to look all this up. If there really is that much of a problem with obtaining rice, I'd better run out and make sure I buy enough to keep us okay. It's not that we eat all that much rice, honestly, but I sure don't want to have none on those nights when I'd like to make fish/chicken and rice dishes.

I watch spongebob too, hehe. My humor for the day. Yes, the news is saying that there are shortages. I am not sure how true it is, however, I know that one of the places that my Roomie saw on the news is monitoring how much rice people are actually allowed to buy. They are talking about it on the BBC every time I turn around including the UN saying we are having issues. I would stock up just to be safe is what I am thinking esp. when you have kids. Meatloaf is not meatloaf with out rice. Ainge

I've never tried meatloaf with rice. I've always used oatmeal. Do you cook the rice first, or do you add it in dry? Yeah, this is a bit off topic. But I like getting new ideas for meals.

You soak the rice in the tomato juice and eggs before you add it to the meatloaf. Mix the meatloaf items like the meat, eggs, and spices while the rice soaks, once you are ready to put the wet ingredients in the meat, you can cook in the oven just like normal. The pre-soaking of the rice helps it cook better. I love new recipes. Ainge

Yes I will have to get as much rice as I can too, but it is hard for me because I eat from the food banks and they hardly ever give rice.

Rose, I understand what you are saying, I know what you mean. I have been to a food bank or two. I just thought people should know, there is a shortage. If I could mail you rice I would. We can get ours for about $1.49 for a kilogram right now. I know I am stocking up. Ainge

Hello Aingealicia. Rice is also our main food in our daily life. I find it hard to imagine without having rice to eat, but some other food instead if there were not enough rice for us to have. But we cannot store too much rice, as it will still be consumed soon so long as we have to eat it every day. Anyway thank you so much for the information about the restriction on how much rice people can buy, though we do not have such information here in China. Take care.

Your very welcome. I guess I did not realize where you were. Yes for you guys this is going to be a huge issue. If the states are putting restrictions upon how much rice you can have it is soon to follow elsewhere. I figured that honestly, people don't have time like I do at home, where I watch the news non stop, unless one of my favorite cartoons is on. (I need a break from reality sometimes you know) I also know that information can be monitored so not everyone has access like I do either. At least for right now until our Government decides otherwise. Take care of yourself too. Ainge

We bought some a few months back in bulk, and transferred it into 2-gallon freezer bags and stuck it in out freezer. It was on sale at the time, and we had room in the freezer for it. I'm glad we did.

I am glad you did too. I watched Colbert and Stewart tonight, they are saying if the media is saying there is not an issue with rice shortages, that there actually is. I know other countries are being affected and we are only a short bit away before it happens to us. Apparently we don't need bee's either. hehe Ainge

You can still buy insects to help your farm! I mean even window gardens can grow lettuce and tomatoes!

My family eats rice fairly frequently but I'm going the other route we are going to try not to buy it for now so others who need it can have our share. Many people in many countries are going to starve without the rice and I am donating my share to them. I want them to have what I can do without.

You gave me a wonderful idea, thank you. The next time I buy rice I will buy two bags and give one to the food shelter. Rose has brought to my attention that the food banks don't really give out rice. I agree with you. I do eat other things like potatoes. Thanks for the response. Ainge
