Internet text chat like LOL and emoticons is now being used in some teenagers course work. " It's nothing to LOL about: Despite best efforts to keep school writing assignments formal, two-thirds of teens admit in a survey that emoticons and other informal styles have crept in." http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,352575,00.html I agree with the article that this is a learning experience on how to teach kids when to use certain writing styles. What I do not under stand: why do kids believe that the informal writing style is okay to use in the classroom? That would be like going to your job and using such language in a report that you are writing for your manager. Where was the education before this point to teach than how to write a proper report?

Oh gosh Sedel, the internet has even made me lazy, and I believe it is out of habit that this happens. Abbreviations are so much easier that is typing or writing long hand. I do believe that proper language teaching skills are in place, and the children out of habit and the feeling that it is cool switch their own writing styles. I believe that teacher need to keep a handle on it in the class room, as parents have a responsibility to monitor homework assignments and make sure that heir children are learning the basic skills, needed for further advancement in education. Lets face it emoticons are not going to cut it on a college application.

I agree with many of the points that were stated in this article. I mean I'm in college and If I were to do that then I would surely get a zero. LOL. I can't afford that. I will admit though that I do use signs and other stuff when I am taking notes but that's something different. It's okay to do it when your taking notes because like that you are able to take all the notes necessary and you won't have to miss anything that the teacher is saying because he/she is talking too fast. I think kids need to differentiate between school work and online work. I mean sometimes it might just slip out by mistake but when it's done all the time then that is a problem. Because if they are going to go to work or work on their resume. Imagine you as a boss of a company or something getting a resume with emoticons and other abbreviations that you don't even understand. What will you think about that?
