It was reported in the news this evening that Scotland's very own national emblem, the Haggis, looks like becoming extinct. This has been blamed on chip shop owners who have bought blackmarket Haggi and this has resulted in virtual extermination of this fine mountain animal. Haggis 'supper' (haggis with chips) is extremely popular in Scotland after drinking copious amounts of Whisky and Tennants lager. What is sad is that the chip shop owners only use the right legs as the left legs are 3 inches shorter and they throw the rest away. The Haggi have longer right legs so this helps them run round the mountains in a faster pace in a anti clockwise direction. Has your country any animals on the verge of extinction?

dodo bird - I thought a dodo was a bird
Your haggis reminds me of the Jackalopes that one used to see in Wyoming Here in the states. I think they went extinct many years ago. We had the head of one for a while until it fell off the wall and broke. Some were almost as big as deer. I thought the dodo was a bird from the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius.

Maybe we should set up a support group and a charity to help preserve this threatened national animal! xxxx

Well, I don't know if the Bunyip is still classed as endangered or is now actually extinct. They are rumoured to once have been very populous in Australia many years ago. Now, you hardly hear about them at all.

Well, I guess I had better come over and see one for myself!

Oh no! This is terrible news. I thought they had found a way to breed them successfully in captivity so that we could have domesticated haggi and let the wild ones get their numbers back up. Well, my partner and I are hoping to move up to Scotland within a year. Perhaps I can take a couple as pets and set up a breeding programme for wild release. Though I'll have to make sure they're both clockwise or both anticlockwise Haggi... it'd be no good breeding ones that couldn't run...

from a little research, it seems theyve been hunted to near extinction quite a few times in the past. that which is not learned from is doomed to be repeated

Those poor Rarebits... I never order Rarebit on toast here. It's a disgrace to the nation that this local beast is being hunted to extinction for such trivial fare. I think perhaps the Hotch Dog has already become extinct... I've never even heard of it.

but you did,nt. you responded. and while i'm here, just because you do not like the discussion, that does not make it 'rubbish'. your opinion is for you alone and you should not go entering into peoples discussions spouting your arrogant rubbish. Now go away from whence you came.

ohhhhhh i miss the haggi of my childhood. On holiday as a child i was enthrawled by tales of the viscious torturing of haggie by heartless pipe players who used to grab the startled, yet trusting small creature and squeeze it until it emmited its mounfull cry. I am not sure why getting it to scream in this way involved blowing on its right leg, but it invaruably did, thankyou for stiring happy memmories blessed be

well, the scotts need to high tail it out to Florida State where released Haggi are playing havoc on the local ecology! small cats are turning up missing! gopher sized holes are plaguing golf courses and sea oats are disappearing. That status seems rather critical.... but still they are such laughing and cuddly looking creatures... especially the babies (Haggles) With all the pictures on this website it is hard to believe that they are on the verge of extinction. Thank you for promoting awareness to this stark reality... it will be truly devestating if the world should lose such a lowly creature as the haggis, due to a HAGGARD education system! http://www.electricscotland.com/haggis/florida.htm

this is a great website for the uneducated. heather shall run rampant on the hills without haggis. She really should know better!

Interesting discussion! I have ever heard of a haggis so I am assuming the tiger looking animal on the left of this discussion is the haggis? It must be interesting to see one of these animals walking around if one leg is 3 inches shorter. It must hobble awful bad! That is horrible that this animal is nearly becoming extinct because of people being so cruel!
