Can't hear the people talk

My cell phone, Moto..la brand, only goes up to volume 7 and I still can't hear people talk. They sound like they are a million miles away. It won't go up any higher. I am sure the volume level should be higher than 7. It work fine and now it doesn't. I didn't drop it or abuse it. So am I doing something wrong as programming it? I have followed the instructions in my handbook. Oh, and one other thing, I get callers from ALL areas, so it's not the distance causing the problem. My phone is not even a year old.
