My cat has problems! I feel like punting him across the room!

My cat is just a mess, and he seems to be getting worse! He digs in the trash, scattering it all over the kitchen, eats holes in any plastic bag I may leave out thinking there might be food inside, eats holes in my clothes (especially my panties,) chews anything with a sting hanging off it (like shoe laces,) and will eat any tiny bit of food on our plate the second we turn our back! UGH!
He's actually ended up at the animal hospital because he ate 6 panties in one sitting and had an obstruction! He nearly died! He'd gotten into the laundry basket and just had a hayday! I was so PISSED when I got home and saw he'd destroyed all of my favorite panties (like $50 worth!) But the vet gave him a shot of something, and a few days later, he was fine. But did this stop him from eating clothes, strings, plastic, and things he shouldn't be eating? NO!
So this morning I come downstairs to our entire trash can littered all over the kitchen, living room, and dining room! It is such a mess! There are little bits nibbed out of most of it! The cat is hiding because he knows he's in big trouble! I just don't know what to do about this behavior! The cat gets fed plenty of food! He consistantly gets in trouble whenever he eats something he's not supposed to eat! YET HE'S STILL DESTRUCTIVE!
Any advice? I'm so at my wits end ANGRY!

I've never had his teeth checked, but he has no issues eating his cat food.

Our male cats eats all the time, even when his teeth are bothering him. If it wasn't for him chewing on other things or bad breath we would not even know that he has teeth problems.

hmmm does he have seperation anxiety. A lot of animals do things like this when are away. If so there is medication that you can get for him.Ask your vet. It seems like thats whats going on.

Well, I've had him since he was very young, and he'll be 4 years old this summer. He just seems to be getting worse instead of better, like the vet said he would. I'm home most of the day, and he sleeps with me most of the night. I just don't get what's wrong with him.
