The Mystery of the Wire Coathangers

My cupboards are full of wire coathangers, but I have NEVER bought a wire coathanger in my life. I hardly ever go to the drycleaners, and nothing I buy comes on a wire hanger. I must have inherited them, but from where ... ? Does anyone know the origin of their wire coathangers?

Most of mine came from dry cleaners, but if you hardly ever go there, I have no idea, unless you've been on holiday and stayed in a hotel or motel. Some of those use wire hangers, and you may have inadvertantly put it in your luggage. Most of the stores here use plastic hangers but the wire ones are a mystery as you say. Sorry, I can't help. Brightest Blessings.

Are you politely suggesting that I have STOLEN them ... ? LOL!!! Seriously, it does happen, and pretty much all hotels/motels here have those hangers which loop around the rail so you can't nick them. Great thinking though, Darkwing. Thanks ;-}

No, of course I wasn't suggesting anything of the kind, but I've done it before, without thinking. I've taken clothes out of the wardrobe and folded them around the coat hanger! Now, as you say, they are fixed onto the pole, so it can't be done, but I would think that stealing such a thing as a coat hanger on purpose would be pretty non-beneficial! I hate the things!!!

Do you really hate them? I don't mind them and they do serve a purpose. As I have about 500 of the things, maybe I have taken them without even realising as you say. Or perhaps I have some strange kleptomania I don't know about ... lol! Maybe I should start LEAVING them at places ... pass on the mystery ...

Most of the ones that I have came from work. when I used to have uniforms, I would turn them in to be cleaned and they would come back on wire clothes hangers

You may get something for them there, another thing you could do if that doesnt work out, is to donate them to some organization such as the Salvation Army or something similiar.

That makes perfect sense. I haven't ever worked anywhere where I needed a uniform. My husband is allowed to dress casually for work, so it is only very occasionally that we would have anything dry cleaned. Maybe they are left over from when I was a kid, in which case they must be antiques (or pretty close to) by now ...!! Maybe I should put them on eBay.

My mom always said that they breed and mutiply like rabbits lol.It could be that you moved them the last time your moved and in all the harrassment of the move you did not even remember them. LIke I said they must breed like bunny rabbits. We got a lot of wire hangers from some that were left in the place that we moved too. I think a lot of people do not like them and just walk off and leave them when they move out. I know we never bought any yet we had them.

I'm glad it's not just me! Thanks for making me feel better. That is a definitely a possibility, as I've lived in a few different places. I just can't remember. It seems that they've been around forever. I'm trying to recall if we had wire ones when I was a kid - I can only remember the wooden ones and those crocheted ones.
