Oh yes, both as a child and as an adult! I think it is a great method!

When I was a child, I saved money in a piggy bank that was in the figure of a popular cartoon character of the time -- Huckleberry Hound. (I think that I may be dating myself here. LOL) I think that the piggy bank might have started out as a shampoo container of some kind, but it did have a slot in Huckleberry's top hat for the coins to be inserted. Fortunately, the head was removable so you could shake the money out. My father used to have a business back in the days when people paid with cash most of the time and he used to give me half of his change at night when he came home from work. It was quite a fun time for me to claim half his change and he would pretend to object -- especially on the days when he brought home a lot of change. Periodically, my mother and I would empty the piggy bank and roll the coins and deposit it in my account. Later, when I graduated from high school, a neighbor's grandson gave me a large ceramic piggy bank. I did not think too much of it. However, my parents kept the piggy bank, and without telling me, put money in it every week ( I think about a dollar a week) while I was in college. They also put in extra money from time to time when they could do so. When I graduated from college, my father cut a whole in the bottom of the bank (because I refused to break the cute "pig") and my parents gave me all of the money that had accummulated there as my graduation present. I was thrilled by not only the gift, but also the thought that they had been saving that money for me continually throughout my college days without ever telling me. I remember that it was also exciting for me to count out the money and to see how much was actually in the piggy bank. I used the money to take a trip with a friend to Atlanta. When I went to law school, I asked them if they would do that for me again. They agreed and when I graduated I used the money to buy a watch. I was so pleased by this gesture that I vowed that when my daughter went to college that I would do the same for her. I found the perfect piggy bank (it had stars on it) because I figured that when I gave it to her I would give her a note that talked about her "reaching for the stars". Unfortunately, that was eight years ago and she has not completed college -- and I don't know that she will. Also, I had not anticipated that I would not want to keep putting more money in while she dawdles in this endeavor. Plus, unlike my father, I get a weekly pay check that is direct deposited and it is harder to remember to do this contribution. I think about the piggy bank from time to time rather wistfully because I regret that, at least so far, it has not been something for me to be able to share with my daughter.

I had a piggy bank when I was a kid until my parents realised it had quite a bit of money in it as I'd been putting my birthday money into and when I was 7 I went with my Mum to open my first bank account! My piggy bank was made of plastic so never got broken.

Yes,i do,Piggy bank is a good memory in my childhood.I think most of the people have ever had piggy banks. You throw one coim into your piggy bank day by day. After along time, you will be alittle rich i think.and the feeling to count the money in my piggy bank is wonderful. When i was a senior middle student,i save all the coins which the par value is cheap, only one Jiao.It will not affect my life and i don't have feeling when i save so little money. But you will find day after day,for one semester,my piggy bank is heavy.I am so happy to count the money and see my piggy bank full. I think if i have a baby,i will buy many piggy bank for her/him.Let she/he know to save something and realize that many a liitle makes a mickle. It is very important.

Hi, that was a really sad story. I feel for you. you must have loved that piggy bank since you've been diligently putting you daily savings on it and to think that you're father gave it to you as a gift. I still have a piggy bank. Make that piggy banks.^_^ The biggest one I never open and its the kind like yours. Its ceramics too and if I want to get to the money inside I would have to break it or to cut the glue paper at the bottom. I also have a small one which I open all the time. I put my short temr savings there and when I need some change for trasnsportation or somehting thats where I get it. My big piggy bank is not full and its not even half full yet but it ahs become heavy so I think I did good in saving all those coins. Ill open it when I cant put any more coins in it. Or maybe ill jsut keep it and buy another one. I really dont want to break that piggy bank. It was given to me by my mother and I have put a few of my daily savings there.^_^
