it's better if there's someone around to help you coz japanese is really hard you'll get confused if the words actually has other meanings and their grammar is actually complicated...

I tried to self-study way back. I even bought a book on how to read and write, as well as another book for reference in meaning or an english - japanese/japanese - english dictionary.
Remembering how to write simply isn't easy. I'd find it more convenient if someone really thought me. Self-studying orally though is more tolerable than writing. I just watch subbed anime series by fans to figure out certain japanese lines and what they mean.

well, language is a very interactive subject. therefore, you need to have interaction at school. there's nothing wrong with self-study, just that, learning and retention will be at its optimum if there was interaction involved in the learning process.
ohayo!

In my opinion, I think learn from tutor is more interesting and fun and more effective too. Because we learn faster from communication and interaction than just by hard those words in Japanese.
Tutoring can teach us the history of the language and also the tips to learn it fast too.

It is usually best to have a tutor in case you end up not knowing how to pronounce anything. Then the tutor will come in handy so you wouldn't end up butchering the language you are learning.

I guess either way can be good as long as the student have the passion for learning and have the intentions of using it. More especially when you have a friend that study as you are and share thoughts and lessons with you. By the way, I self study it.
