When using a Gift Card......

Canada

How do you pay? Do you give the cashier the cash first or the gift card? We had a very upset customer the other day who payed with cash first and then proceeded to pay with a gift card which she then thought she should get her change in cash but we had applied the cash first as she gave that first so the change remained on the gift card! It was a big headache to fix!!!! Why is it that the customer is always right even when they aren't!! It can be so frustrating at times!! I look forward to hearing how you pay when using a gift card...I know I always exhaust the funds of the card and then have the cashier tell me my balance owing before handing over any cash...I have always done it this way! It just makes sense to me! Thanks so much for your thoughts here! ~Heavens~

How amazingly rude that the customer got all tiffy with you for her mistake! I can't even imagine why someone would try to pay with cash first and follow that with the gift card. I personally would never have thought that a store would give me change back from a gift card. So to answer your first question, I always pay with the gift card first and follow with whatever is still owed in cash. That's the only way that makes any sense at all to me. If nothing else, the woman should have had the sense to flip the card over and read the fine print on the back. If I'm not terribly mistaken, don't they typically say something to the effect that they can't be traded for cash or no change will be given, etc., etc.? A statement such as that should tip someone off that they shouldn't expect to hand over a card and get money back. Regardless, kudos for handling it so well! I've never worked in any sort of retail position before but have to give you all the credit in the world for being able to do it. I can only imagine some of the irate people you get coming through your line. BTW, I like what you said, I think in a response to someone else. I wouldn't feel too bad if this customer never returned either. I'm sure the company/store isn't going to go bankrupt if one difficult customer finds a new place to shop.

Oh, no worries at all about being a while to get back to me. I can completely understand how busy life can get. I'm glad this particular customer has decided to move on to another store and you haven't had to deal with her since. And thankfully you don't see too many like her on a regular basis.*hugs*

Irate people are thankfully few but they do exist and it is those days that I contemplate finding employment elsewhere but mostly the client el is great and they are very considerate and understanding for the most part...Personally I have never seen her since and so I am certainly hoping that she has moved on to another one of the many grocery stores in my city! Thanks so much mamakat for your high compliments and I do apologize for taking so long to get back to you here but I do want to thank you and let you know that I appreciate your kindness in responding from the heart here! ~Heavens~

Are you telling me that the cashiers have not been trained in reading minds or have no skills in this area!!!??? Shame! . Some people (customers) just don't think sometimes and when they make themselves look stupid they always blame the sales person or cashier.

You should always hand the cashier the gift card first and then pay the balance in cash. I believe that the customer to always considered right, because they are not trained to know what the workers in the store know. That could have been her very first gift card. So she just did'nt know. You always want to be as accomadating as possible to your customers so they will want to come back to your store again. When someone gives a gift card from your store, they are saying, I really like this store. I reccomend that you go and check it out. I know you are the type of person who would love it as much as I do. The gift card is the incentive to get them to go there.

Oh no, she did this intentionally as it was a girl in training that she was paying....She wanted to make a stink I think! She really got agitated too as it took a long time for the supervisor to figure out how to fix this so the till would not be short! ~Heavens~

if I plan on using a gift card I will hand the card to the cashier first and after she deducts the purchase I will pay any remaining amount that is due for the item/s It just makes sense.

It is commen sence, that you pay with your gift card first, and after you spend all the money in the card, you will pay by cash. I always do like this, and i also believe most people will just do the same way!

I always hand the gift card over first. I'm not always sure how much money is left on the card so I pay with that first and have them take everything off the card that they can. Then I pay with cash. I just like using it first and then paying the rest in cash. It's so much easier to do that way.

I thought everyone would have the sense to produce the card first and foremost as that is the only way that makes any sense! There is always one though isn't there? Then again having said that I would probably do the same sometimes if I was stressed and harrased! lol xxx

I do hate to say this, but there was a dj here in town a few years ago and he had the answer. PEOPLE ARE STUPID. He used to say that all the time when he told stories about the stupid things that people do and that would be one of them. I did work in a department store many years ago so I know exactly what you mean about the customer always being right when they sure aren't. They say that so the customer will be happy and will continue to shop at the store. But sometimes I wonder if you want those "stupid" people in your store!! I would always use the gift card first since you are using your own money to pay for the balance. If you have common sense, that makes sense, but many people don't have and have to have things explained for them in detail, sometimes more than once before it is over with. Sure does tax your patience.

That customer sound quite befuddled, or else s/he was trying to pull a scam on you. I suspect the latter. When I worked in retail I found that usually when a customer acted out and got loud it was an effort to draw attention away from a scam of some sort. They know that some clerks will do almost anything to get the customer to quiet down, so they make a big fuss just to take advantage of the situation. I always present the gift card first, and then if there is more to pay I prefer to put it on plastic, as I don't like handling money any more now that there are so many people who do not wash their hands. That is one reason I love McDonald's because I love paying with the ArchCard.

You could be right as she came through my trainee who was clearing an "in training"badge! Yes, I agree with you with the handling of cash and don't blame you for that! We don't have an ArchCard for McDonald's in Canada! Is it like a credit card that you can only use at McDonald's? ~Heavens~

Yes it is a gift card that slides through like a debit card, but no fee. They have cute seasonal pictures on them, too. I buy a year's supply at Christmas time in order to get the holographic tree lights design. It is cleaner and so much more fun that handling money.

The customer is right and when they gave you the gift card it was your job to correct things, like you did. You shouldn't get upset over it, it is your job, to give customer satisfaction. I know it was a mistake on the customers fault but maybe, in defense to the customer, they didn't know they had to give it to you first. Or maybe they forgot they had it. Whatever the reason, it was good of you to change it and help them out.

hello, it makes sense to me too use the entire card then pay the rest with cash.. its all about the money, thats why customer(money) is always right. management dont want unhappy customer(money) walking out the door as it may not come back, were as happy customer(money) will always come back... i know how hard it is at times to deal with the general public & still keep a smile on my face so i can understand your frusration..

Well, the thing is that she should have gave the card first but in giving the cash first it was applied to the bill first!!! Had she given the card first then she would have received the fourteen dollars change in change instead of it being the balance on the gift card...Our head CSM had to be called at home in order to figure out how to fix this in the system meanwhile the customer had to wait and got angrier and angrier! Truly, none of us cares if she ever comes back!!! There are some customers that you can afford to lose in my opinion!! ~Heavens~

Most normal people including you, I and it seems most of your responders exhaust the gift card first and then pay the balance in cash or plastic. It would hurt my brain too much to try and figure it out the other way around. I am sorry you had to deal with the dullest tool in the shed AND have to cater to them

I have always been the same way. I will use the Gift Card until I know the balance is $0 and then I will pay with cash the balance due. For me, this makes a lot more sense. This way you know your Card is empty and there are no questions about that. Wish everyone could be the same way. Would make it so much easier as well.

I will always use the gift card FIRST, and if I need to add some cash on later, I will add the amount I need. If I give a gift card for $50 and it costs my $55 and all I have is a $10, I will use the entire gift card, and get the $5 in cash.

of course I would use the gift card first, that would be the only reasonable way. Having a job to serve people can be stressful at times. There are so many different types of problems from so many different types of people and sometimes you can get into the most ridiculous situations. But yes, the customers are always right because they're the ones who are paying the money that keeps the business going

Thanks yona but in some cases they really should not be right and in some cases it would be best if they found another store because some people are just not worth it and the wages we earn are definitely not worth putting up with all the hassle! I have been working at the same grocery for over three years now and have only received one raise and so now the consequence is that I am only making minimum wage!!! So, those who have been there only a month are making the same as me and this is not right!! How much should I really have to put up with under these circumstances!?! ~Heavens~
