Should cats be allowed outside or should they be inside pets?

I have a seventeen year old cat that has always been an inside cat. I think she is healthy and still alive because she has not been allowed to roam outside. Some people believe cats need to be outside at least part-time because they enjoy it. 'Enjoyment' for them is getting hit by cars, being hurt by dogs or other cats, killing birds and picking up feline leukemia from other cats (the shot does NOT always work!). I have several friends who have had their cats killed by cars and they moan and groan because their cat is dead. Cats need to be protected by their owners and I believe it is irresponsible to let beloved pets fend for themselves outside of their homes. Any thoughts?

All but one of my cats are inside only. She's outside because she hates the inside cats. Everytime I have tried to bring her inside, even introducing her properly, it just upsets her. Since she's now about 14 I figure that since she's happy outside, I'll just let her live out her life happy.

We have a friend who's cat is like that. But Mitten is actually so terrified of the other cats that she gets upset and hides (and messes.) She's happy outside, and at 14 I don't see why I should try and stress her by bringing her in.

Your outside cat is lucky to have you feeding and taking care of her. I agree, some cats just can't get along with other cats. I had one that was literally trying to kill my other one, so I found him a home and specified no other cats. He's very happy and I have visitation rights.

If you feel this way, then what about other things that attack birds? I guess that is just one of your points, but if cats did have a say in what they wanted, they would probably want to be outdoors. It sounds like you are a very loving person and it's nice of you to care so much for your cat. She sounds healthy and happy. Are you sure she isn't fat? Most indoor cats are. Especially if you aren't around a lot to keep them busy by playing with them. Are you away a lot and does your cat get angry with you? Do you think that she would rather not have you around or be outside? I am sorry if you think I am being a little aggressive, but I had a cat that was hit by a car and I am not moaning and groaning. I can really say she was happier outside than indoors.

Regarding your cat that was hit by a car? Do you think it is happier being smooshed in the road than laying on your lap, purring, safely inside your home? Also, have you ever had a cat just disappear outside? Did you ever consider that it might have been kidnapped by an animal testing organization? Calling all animal lovers: PLEASE keep your cats/dogs/whatever safe and secure. They depend on YOU for protection!!!!!!!!!

Also, what other animals kill birds, other than other birds and wild animals?. Domestic cats are not wild animals. I had a family of Blue Birds wiped out by my neighbor's cat.

I think it depends a bit on your environment. Good job protecting and caring so well for your cat! I do not have a pet because I do not like to keep animals in my house. i just do not like it. I do not think it is nice to have a pet that is never allowed inside either.

I believe cats shouldnt be let outside unless you have a fenced in yard, and they have all their claws,so that way they can take care of themselves, otherwise cats should be inside pets,so that way they can be kept safe and out of danger.
