Shoveling poop before cooking.... what do you think of this?

For those wondering, I watch the shows on Sunday as a repeat instead of catching the original on Monday.
Ok so they had Ben (I think) shoveling the poop from the horses... in the same chef jacket he wears later that day to cook. I know they are just trying to make it look like he's being punished, but isn't that unsanitary? I wouldn't want my chef around poop like that! He could have it on his shoes, then touch his shoe, then touch the food! Not good in my opinion.
In past punishments they had to clean a bunch of garbage, or mass produce fish/meat, etc. Whatever it was, it was bound to leave them with some germs on the.
What do you think? Do they go a little far in these punishments? I know they are trying to make good TV but it seems like they aren't thinking about the health of doing all these tasks just shortly before cooking.

A/ I have no idea what show you're talking about but B/ I was a culinary arts major so here's my input.
It's a tv show.
How do you know it was the SAME shirt?
How do you know it wasn't washed prior to that segment of the show filmed later that he was wearing the "same" shirt?
How do you know that segment filmed "later" wasn't actually filmed "first"? and finally... what is unsanitary is not the clothes you wear, the things you did prior to going into the kitchen and/or the things you do after leaving the kitchen. The part of you that needs to be sanitary and clean is your hands. and as long as he properly washed his hands between shoveling poop and working in the kitchen, he's fine.
when you work in a kitchen washing your hands is a constant. if you sneeze, you must wash your hands. if you touched your foot, you must wash your hands. after touching raw meat, you must wash your hands. after washing dishes, you must wash your hands. after cutting vegetables, you should wash your hands. after using the bathroom, you must wash your hands. Whatever you were doing prior to touching food, you must wash your hands.... and you should wash your hands as you transition between foods as well as any instance where you were not touching food in between.
So yeah. I think it was sanitary.

Yeah I know it's a TV show but it still seems gross to me to even show it on a TV show. Anyway, I know ppl wash their hands a lot in the kitchen, but I don't believe that everyone is as clean as you talk about being, at least not on this show where they are cooking 10 things at once and running around trying to cook it all in 5 mins.
In fact last year a girl threw spagetti in the garbage, then found out she needed it, and scooped it out to serve! Of course the Chef caught that, but yeah not everyone is as sanitary as most people would like.
I don't know if it's the same shirt but it always appears as if they go right into dinner service right after doing the poop shoveling (or whatever it may be) and you are right it is probably taped that way to make it look like a hardcore punishment.

Oh let me clarify. That's how people SHOULD be in the kitchen and those are the Kitchen RULES. I wasn't, by any means, saying that is what everyone who works in a kitchen does.
I figured out you were talking about Hell's Kitchen which is a show I can't watch anyway because it disgusts me. So I guarantee that they've done unsanitary things.
The other thing I should point out, and this is gross and I'm not saying it makes it sanitary OR OK...cooking things, kills germs. Not all germs. Not all the time. but cooking things does kill germs. so you have to always remember that too.

Yes I have heard that when food hits a certain temp germs are killed, that's why sometimes if something hits my table or even the floor, I salvage if I can and say the heat will kill the germs :)
I guess I didn't put Hell's Kitchen in my post! But yes they seem to not worry about cleanliness or sanitary on the show. Chef only cares if it is cooked right!

I totally agree with you. It's disgusting and unsanitary. I know they are making punishments undesirable for the show but still nasty is nasty. I think the punishments should be left to preparing foods, prep for next service or cleaning IN the kitchen. I didn't mind the time they had to unload a truck of supplies though. That was pretty reasonable.

I think there were a few times last year or this year where they had to pick through garbage and not only did I think it was gross for them to touch it, I thought it was gross how they poured it all over the parking lot.
I agree that challenges should be kept to cooking related. No chef is going to have to go shovel poop outside his restaurant.

I doubt he was wearing the same exact dirty chef jacket. There is a time constraint so they probably didn't show him washing the jacket. I don't think Gordon would allow that no way. He is a clean person, can't stand a little grease in the kitchen so I doubt horse poop would be allowed.
