AMD or Intel?

Does anyone have a preference for the kind of processor on their computer? I have noticed that Intel has a big share of the market and that they have the ears and hearts of dealers who push their product over AMD. Do you have personal experience with any of them or both? Which would be preferable?

Before I used to be a loyal Intel user. I got my first PC (an intel 486) then a pentium 100, then a celeron, and my last Intel was Pentium 4 1.6Ghz. After my Pentium 4 1.6ghz, I switched to AMD Athlon64 since it was cheaper than the Intel counterpart and my use was not that heavy. Since then, I have shied away from Intel processors mainly because of the price and my usage is not that heavy. I may be doing a lot of multitasking but I am still comfortable with the performance of my AMD. I just make sure to check a few things before I buy. Besides the clock speed of course, I also check the L2 cache and the FSB. The last processor I bought was Athlon64 X2 4400+. I had checked reviews and the AMD website and it was what I needed. However, the actual product I got was different since it only had a cache of 512Kb x 2 (the AMD website says it should've 1MB x 2). I immediately complained about it with the store I bought it from but I was told that in my country all stocks of 4400+ up to 5800+ only had 512KB x 2 cache. And so, I ended up trading it up for a X2 6000+.

I have been a user of AMD computers since the days when Intel 386 could only reach 33Mhz and the AMD 386's ran circles around it at 40Mhz. AMD broke the 1 Ghz barrier but it ran into trouble with high temperatures which was a bad bump on the road for AMD. Nowadays, when processors are so fast that you could multitask without too much trouble, the big factor is price and AMD is still priced lower than Intel. I have both Intel and AMD computers.

We using a Intel processor here. But many of my friends and others using the AMD processor. From their experience i think the AMD processor have more performance. But it is according to the usage of computer, that is for what we using our system. And if we want to sell our used system then i think the Intel processor will help to get more price. Thanks

There are many people who like both and I do use both from time to time. Right now, I am using Intel but I might buy AMD next when I have the money. Cheers!!

Cache Memory:- Faster, Most effective to Speed And too Costy 1. Core2Duo Is Best because It has 3MB Cache Memory (L2). AMD 5200+ has 1 MB Only. Clock Speed:- 2. Core2Duo has 2.5+2..5 (Double Core Processor). AMD Has higher then Core2Duo in This Factor. FSB:- Both AMD And core2duo Have Same FSB of 900 Cost:- AMD is Cheaper Then Core2Duo all over core 2 duo is best because There Are Many Full Fetures Board ( On Board 512 MB Grapics, Sounds, Networking, Upgradable) for core2duo but for AMD there are nothing for Upgrade

I have an Intel Dual-core now which I use for surfing. I used to have an AMD dual core too which was way faster than my current one. I'd like to buy another dual core AMD. Cheers!!

I always base my preference on the needs. If its for regular computing then its AMD, this way I could beef up video, memory and hard disk. For really serious stuff, normally price is not an issue, then Intel is the way to go. Great discussion here Underdogtoo:)

Thanks ferdzNK, I guess all of us are grateful to computers and those that design and make them. There are so many things that I want to do with computers, one of which is to make music but my time is consumed by many other things and I suppose it will be a long while before I can enjoy one of my many passions.

After first being dissapointed with Intel Processors I switched to AMD hoping for a better processor and was plenty rewarded. However with the new Dual-core and Quad-core processors I would probably go for Intel as they seem to be more focused now... Also they now allow overclocking which used to be an advantage of only AMD which means a lot of over-clockers and gamers have switched to Intel.

One thing good about competition is that the public benefits from their race to produce the best at the cheapest. I cannot even wrap my head around a quad-core computer but 8-core or more are certainly being created even as we speak and the ways that these will be useful to us are unimaginable.

Users like us might have very little or no use for 8-core processors but large organizations with great computing needs, research centers and those making climate modelling use multi-core, multi-processor systems that I cannot even begin to imagine. I remember the Connection Machine which had 65,535 6502 processors (the kind that powered 1 apple II) each of which had each own memory. Supercomputers are not made by having 1 cpu with large capacity and terrific speed but with multiple processors being wired together. Multi-core cpus take it one level higher and they wire these together to make even more powerful computers.

I agree, competition is definately a good thing, but it seems to me that Intel always have the upper hand in the general market due to their links with big companies - some software, for example, only works on Intel processors. As for 8-Core processors it's clear that the companies are simply trying to out-do each other by bringing out new products as quickly as possible, without thinking about the consumer - who needs an 8-core processor??

hello i really don't go a head with AMD, it's kinda Slow and lot of Troubles when u add a new Devisces or just to upgrade a RAM ... Intel is just clean and all my computers use the intel Technology.

I'm really glad that computers are much faster than me. I used to wait around while my computer compiles and links on a system without hard disks. AMD or Intel, computers have become super fast. Cheers!!

Hi underdogtoo... in my office iam using AMD Duron at home i am using Intel D. personally i prefer to buy and use Intel processor logically because it has a big share of the market meaning many people use it prefer it and buy it. it became the market leader for that reason of its quality and performance so for buying Intel got my vote! ^_^ SMILE ALWAYS...

I have used AMD because it is trying harder than Intel and it sells for less money. Lately, Intel has been slashing its prices so I bought a dual core intel pentium. AMD has been trying harder like I said earlier and its technology is superior to Intel in many respects. Intel is the leader because Intel has the patents and AMD is merely creating its own version of the Intel processor without copying from it and it has to pay intel for this license to "copy" without copying. Both are great in my opinion. Without competition we might not have the cool processors we now have.

Intel...the name needs no introduction either and has shown such a huge growth in the market and passed out other at the same time in the market too. I think Intel is the best for the processor as it is most reliable brand for the computer accessories and specially the processors...the best.I am using the Laptop Compaq 6409 presario and it is having all the Intel accessories rite from the graphic card to the processor. The processor is the Intel core 2 duo inside and it is the best and the processing speed is just ultimate so what i think is that the Intel is even better than the AMD.

Intel is not considered the best processor in tech circles. There are others superior to it in design but it happened to be the one used by IBM on its personal computer and it has dominated the market since. The 80268 Intel chip is considered to be a "brain-damaged" chip which was inferior to the Motorola 6800-series chip due to its segmented memory architecture which was a throwback to the first microprocessor invented. It could only address 64KB of memory so they devised the 'segment/offset' architecture to get around the limitation thereby giving the cpu 640KB of memory that it can directly address.

Lately, I have been thinking of a quad-core based computer and I checked out AMD Phenom against Intel Core 2 Quad. It appears the Intel Chip beats AMD's chip in almost all benchmarks. Cheers!!
