i have been taught to use a spoon and fork to eat. primarily, the spoon to get the food and into the mouth and the fork to assist food get into the spoon or use to pierce into food such as meat. why do i see some people use the fork more than the spoon to get food with, isn't it more practical to use the spoon to get the food from a plate rather than a fork? food would go though the fork whereas, the spoon has a solid plane like a shovel. chopstick users are excluded.

Oh no, why are you excluding chopstick users? That's not nice.
JK..
I use fork because it can pick up solid foods easily. While I use spoon for soups and some tiny pieces that can't be picked up by the fork. Sometimes I find spoons to big to put in the mouth plus the food loaded on it. You have to open your mouth wide to let it in. Whereas I find fork sexier to use.

hehehe, i do use chopsticks if i eat at a japanese restaurant or places were they use chopsticks.spoon is obviously the choice for soups. maybe a smaller spoon would do the trick, if you find using the spoon sexier then i cannot contest that, i agree.

Yes we are taught to use it to get the food into our mouth. In country like England they prefer to use fork than spoon because they like to eat meat. But here in my country we use both me, i sometimes use spoon alone at home.

It is the best team to use, fork and spoon. But if I am not mistaken, its the French style of eating, please someone correct me on this. I do like to use chopstics in eating noddles but as you said fork and spoon is the best.

Yeah I agree, I actually have been finding myself to use spoons more often. Especially when I am eating pastas. But when it comes to eating vegetables or salmon or something, I still use a fork. More times than not, I use a spoon.

i still find myself using the spoon and the fork to assist it in eating spaghetti pasta. of course, with veggie salads i do use the fork to pick it up but with salmon, i still use the spoon.

Yes I use spoon and fork. I don't know how to use chopsticks or my hands alone to feed myself. I need a fork and spoon. It is much decent and cleaner to do so.

thanks , halliwel. i use chopsticks if i am in a chinese or japanese restaurant and if i feel like using my hands then i do, depends on the delicasies i am gorging on. a spoon and fork is more practical, indeed.

I use both most of the time when there is rice in my food. However, there are times that I just use fork. I find spoon too big. If one is used to eating rice all the time then one would want to use spoon. But I don't eat rice all the time and there are days that I don't get to eat rice. When I just eat viands, I just used spoon and knife.

It actually depends on what I eat. If I'm eating rice, I would prefer to use a spoon. If I'm having spaghetti, I'll use a fork. In general, I would prefer to use both.

I eat everything with just a fork although I was taught to eat with a knife and fork. I occasionally use a knife as well if I'm eating meat and have to cut it up or if I'm eating in public. Apart from that I use a fork for everything. The only time I've used a spoon and a fork together is if I'm in an Italian restaurant and eating stuff like spaghetti because using the two together does make it easier to eat.
I see your point about food going through the fork but then you can stab food with a fork which stops it falling off. I guess it depends on what sort of food you're eating of course.

reading through some comments, it seems that it really depends on the food that we eat in certain regions of the globe. you know at times, i use the spoon to cut through some food, even with meat.too, lazy to use a knife.thanks .

I use the spoon for some dishes and the fork for other.
I use the spoon for more liquid dishes, such as soup (and there are many types of soup that we commonly eat in my country).
I use the fork for most dishes. It's true that food fits well in the spoon, but if a certain type of food is made of larger and slippery pieces, it can fall from the spoon, or it can bounce from the lips or teeth. When I use the fork for the type of food I just mentioned, there isn't such a risk - the fork is well sticked and no food pieces fall.
A good example can be that of an olive: the olive can roll from the spoon, whilst if you stick a fork in it (yrs, that may not be so easy) it's easier to control.

Very good point you bring up, when eating solid foods we do use a fork for everything. I have a friend and he eats rice a lot and he will never use a fork, he uses a spoon and tells me it does not make sense to eat the rice with a fork when you can get more rice on the spoon and it's just a lot easier to eat.

for me the spoon is like a shovel where nothing falls out of its grasp that is why i was wondering why some or most people uses the fork rather than the spoon. i guess, it's how you grew up with and get used to. i guess, it became already a habit.

I use a fork.. I like the shape and look of a fork better than a spoon when I was young and always stuck with it since lol. I also find it more convenient to have one fork to scoop and pierce food than a spoon and a fork to scoop and pierce. I only use a spoon when I'm eating only rice (with some meat in it :P)

does this mean that you can't make your other hand scoop food with and the other hand to use the fork to pierce meat or something with? you only use one hand to eat with? just clarifying.thanks, raymond.

I use a fork. I have no idea where I got the habit from. The only time I never use a fork, is when I eat soup. I've even used a fork to eat pizza! lol...the deep dish ones.
I was taught to use a spoon when I was a young'un, so I really don't know why I currently use a fork for anything I eat.
I personally prefer to use a fork because it holds less food than a spoon does and I like to eat little bits of food at a time.

In my country, the Philippines we use both. One of our colonizers is the Spaniards and they taught us to use the spoon and fork. The spoon and fork are also known as "kubyertos". That is just a little trivia for you guys. The spoon and fork are always complementary. When you go to the restaurant or eat in one of your friend's house, if you look at the table you will always see a pair of spoon and fork. We use both the spoon and fork all the time.
