Oh dear God, I was so upset this weekend. I got a tick on my for the first time in my life this weekend. I was running my hard through my hair when I felt a bump on the top of my head, I ran my finger over it again, at first thinking that I had a bug bite or a pimple on my head, but when I touched it the second time I realized that it was something foriegn. Only once I pulled it off, and it feeling like picking a scab, did I realize that it was a tick. I threw it in the ashtray on the coffee table and told my husband. He got a paper towel and picked it up and threw it in the woodstove where it burned to death, but I am still horrified. I think it was an American Dog Tick, but I really don't know. Can anyone please give me tips for ways to keep ticks away (other than covering up, wearing and hat and store bought bug repellant, I'm already doing all that.)

OHhhhh, yuck. Wood ticks really give me the heebie jeebies! Unfortunately, we have alot of them here in SE Minnesota. We also have the very dangerous deer ticks, which can cause Lyme disease. Your best bet if you're going to be in the woods is to wear light colored clothing (to make them easier to spot), use duct tape or rubber bands on the bottom of your jeans, wear long sleeve shirts and a scarf or hood on your head. I prefer a lightweight hooded sweatshirt. Still, nothing you can do will keep them out 100%. Just be sure to shower and check yourself all over after spending time in tick infested areas.

I have one of those netted mosquito head cover things, I think I will be wearing that over my hat from now on if I go any deeper into the woods than my backyard.
