The Dreaded Chicken Pox

My daughter came home from her friends house yesterday covered in red bumps, some blisters, from her head to her thighs. I had my mom take a look at her, she works as a nursing assistant so I'm always having her look over my kids. She told me to take her to the ER because she could have the mumps, measals, or chicken pox. The doctor said it was either chicken pox or another viral infection, but looked more to be like chicken pox. He prescribed some medicine to help with the itching, but it's not working that great so I am also giving her benedryl. Both combined seem to help but not 100%. I'm also giving her motrin for her fever. Don't worry, I'm not giving her these medicines at the same time. This morning she woke up and has more of the bumps; like the doctor said, it will get worse before it gets better. She has been sleeping most of the day. I have her in her bedroom and am not letting anyone go in there. I am the only one who has had the chicken pox and I only had a very mild case. I have been washing my hands like crazy and everything she touches gets washed. I'm going to be giving her a nice bath in a bit to help keep her clean and I am going to be washing her bed linen daily. I am doing everything I know to do to keep her comfortable and to keep everyone else from catching it. I just hope I don't catch it, because it's supposedly deadly or very severe for adults. But I am not going to let her suffer through this alone either. She has to not feel like she is alone right now. Every time I bring her something to eat, drink, or her medicine she thanks me, blows me a kiss, and tells me she loves me. I feel so bad for her because I know she is miserable right now. Has anyone else had to deal with the chicken pox? My husband went to get her school work for the week, her request, and her teacher said that there are alot of children out with it.

I remember when I had them when I was in first grade, I was out for six weeks because I had been exposed to them right before having my tonsils taken out, so I had them bad.. Also my first three children had them, my son had it first, he got it from a classmate and then the girls got them at the same time.. My 5 y/o won't get them because he has gotten the vaccination for it. Sounds like you are doing all you can..Try getting some aveno, that helps with some itching and keep her nails trimmed so she can't scratch too much.. So you will have your hands full for a while, but when it is over, that is it, you won't have to worry about it again..

The sad thing is, she had the vaccine for the chicken pox and this is the second time she's gotten them. The first time was a mild case and only lasted a few days. But this time it's bad. I am going to get some Aveno. And I am having her wear gloves to sleep in so she doesn't scratch while she is sleeping.

It's going around at the school and she got it from one of her classmates. I know what you mean. I thought she wouldn't get it either because of the vaccine, but she did and twice at that.

You mean to say that she got a vaccination and still got the chicken pox? Twice..???What is it the medical community is not telling us? I got my son vaccinated to insure he wouldn't get them and now I find that he still might.. Well, with your daughter, after this she shouldn't have any more problems..But did they explain how she was able to get the chicken pox??

Oh, the fun of that. Try putting some oatmeal in her bath. It will help to dry them up and helps with the itching. It makes the water look a little dirty, and my son didn't want to get in. Afterwards, he wanted in with that "stuff" everytime he would start itching again. I put almost 2 cups in his bathwater. You can also buy packets at the store, but I just used oats and it worked and was cheaper.

You mean oatmeal as in the food, uncooked of course? I will have to try that.

I forgot to ask. Do you put it in the water while the water is running or after?

I put it in when it was about half full and then after it was filled, finished mixing it up.

I had four children with the chicken pox at the same time! Luckily, we now have a vaccine to prevent chicken pox and shingles too!

Four at the same time? I couldn't imagine! I would be so exhausted from taking care of four with the chicken pox.

I was exhausted! And then I ended up with shingles from being re-exposed to chicken pox! Fun!

I've had the chicken pox, and my dad has had them twice! I was always told that you only get it once in your life, or well, you should only get it once. The only 2 people in my household that I know of that hasn't had them is my 1 sister and brother, and possibly my boyfriend. They drive you nuts! I can tell you though, my mother gave us Aveeno Oatmeal baths, it cuts down on the itching. That could make her feel a little more comfortable too.

sounds like you have everything under control. you are a great mom to your children and your husband appreciates it a bunch. seeings how I have never had the chicken pox before. Could you imagine if it spread everywhere and everyone had it we would be in a terrible fix. Keep up the great work mom and just be there for her and comfort her the way you are now and she will be just fine.

I am trying my best to keep it from speading throughout the entire house. I will continue what I have been doing until she gets better.
