last year my father-in-law tried to grow tomatoes out of a bale of hay. he had such a good turn out that he is doing it again this year. all you do is water down the hay with ferilizer for a few days, then you make a hole and put some potting soil along with the plant in it. and you grow it like you normally grow it. Has anyone ever tried it this way?? what was your turn out???

I had intended to try this this year - finding a source for square bales is not so easy anymore... but anyhow, I injured my foot and was not able to get a go on it. maybe it is not yet too late?

I'm sorry to hear about your foot. I hope you get better soon. And I understand, it is hard to find the hay now-a-days. It took my father-in-law a few weeks to find some. thank you for responding.

gee thats interesting, I wouldn't have thought that tomatoes could grow like that, I have mine in great big pots because I thought they needed a lot of soil...sounds like a good idea.

he tries so many different techniques, like a barrell and a bucket, each time he produces the best tomatoes i've ever eaten. thank you for responding.

I haven't tried it but if I had a bale of hay I sure would! I did some reading on container gardening and that's one of the things that was mentioned. I don't have room for a 'real' garden here so I'll be using a very small space alongside the house, and then a few containers. Wish I knew someone that had some old moldy hay they were going to throw out. That would be perfect for my needs here.
