Well i am planning to upgrade my aspire 4520g's processor, after replacing the processor should i put a new thermal pad on the heatsink, or is paste better?

I have a toshiba laptop. The silly thing keeps turning itself off, so I have packed it away! I have had the fan cleaned. I have completely cleaned the system so there is virtually nothing on it. I have tried using it without the battery pack attached and directly plugged in to the mains supply, as apparantly that can cause problems sometimes. I have tried using it with an external cooler attached. Would you say it is broken beyond repair or something that could be fixed. Would be great if you had any solutions I could try. I do miss using it but can't afford to purchase another. Oh it is about five years old now!
