Sometimes we can write better by observing our surroundings better and by describing them in detail.
Close your eyes for a moment and while your eyes are closed, I want you to really focus on what you hear.
Write down what you hear. Describe the sounds that you hear in a complete sentence.
Then open your eyes. Look around you.
Write down at least one thing that you see around you in using as much detail as you can. Use complete sentences.
I'll do this writing exercise first...
When I close my eyes, I can hear my toilet which needs repair running on and on... It sounds like a poorly designed water fountain or the sound of an incomplete flush. (I have called my apartment manager and am waiting for it to be fixed as the flushing is wasteful and as the sound is very annoying.)
I hear the traffic sounds from a distant freeway mixed with bird songs.
I open my eyes and see, alongside my computer monitor and keyboard, one tall glass of cold water. The clear glass has three blue stripes painted on it near the rim and is resting on a pink and white knitted plastic coaster. That coaster is resting on a table which is made of light or honey oak.
Now it is your turn...
First close your eyes.
Listen.
Type what you hear using complete sentences and details if possible.
Then... open up your eyes.
Focus on one thing that is around you (other than your computer, monitor or keyboard as we already know that you have these things as you are here on myLot using them.)
Write about that one thing that you have focused on using one sentence or two. Describe it in as much detail as you can so we can see it to.
Have fun doing this.
Let's practice writing!

Yes, you did well... that fan blowing your sheet calendar and that photo of your sister...
I wonder... did this exercise make you see, hear, or feel more deeply than you did prior to it?
