Do you have a penpal?

Years ago people used to have a traditional penpal where you would write a letter, send it by snail mail, eagerly await it's response and write back, now with the advent of the internet this must have cut writing and art of writing a letter severely. Are there any of you out there who have or have had penpals? did you ever meet them? how long did you write to them for? I guess some of my friends are emailpals.. I write to them or send them funny emails on a regular basis, but not had a penpal as such. What are your thoughts?

When I was a schoolboy, which was more than 30 years ago, I had a lady penpal from Philippines. I wrote to her about a dozen times and received about that many replies. Actually, I first wrote to her sister to be penfriends, but she was the one who responded and became my penpal instead, and we corresponded for a few years. In those days, it was a thrill to receive a letter from a penpal in the mailbox. Most youngsters these days don't know how to enjoy such thrills because they don't know the art of writing letters and sending them in the post. Guess what..to this day, I still have my penpal's photo and all her letters!! I never threw them away nor forget her, but I wonder how she is now after all these years. Interestingly, I also wrote letters to two other ladies when I was still in school and in the university. Both of these persons are dear to me and are from my country. These exchange of letters came about by coincidence and they were not really my penpal. I can't recall the circumstances, but we just started writing to each other all of a sudden. All these letters, I still keep with me. You know what? One of them is now my wife of 22 years.

I kept them all because they were special and sentimental to me. Imagine taking out the letters I received from my wife (my pen-friend then) and reading them out to my wife to share what she wrote to me before we entered into a serious relationship. It will be fun, amusing and nostalgic, I think.

I still have penpals now, whom I met online. I do exchange e-mails with them as well, but we like to send handwritten letters and small gifts and souvenirs in the snail mail too. Mine are mainly in America and Canada at the moment, and I haven't met any of them yet. However, three of them are intending to come here next year, and that will be a very tearful but enjoyable time. Brightest Blessings. xx

I had a ton of penpals in the United States and I have kept in touch with three of them for over 25 years. I was really lucky to get to meet them all face to face and yes, they dragged out all the boxes of letters and stuff we'd sent back and forth over the years. I kind of feel sorry for kids today that they missed out on something like having an actual penpal and having to run to the mailbox to send something out.

There are quite a few who still write on a regular occasion, (see example in earlier comment), It is sad, but I do keep in touch with penpals via email, which is one consolation I suppose!

Yea that was a long time ago! I forgot how I ended up having penpals, but I had two. We wrote each other for a few years when we were both studying. But then I guess life got us somehow and we lost in touch! I saw their pictures but never really get to meet them! I love the idea of penpal and I would love to have one now if I am offered a chance! I think it's a very classic idea.

I've been thinking about it for a long time, sharing your thoughts with someone who doesn't know what life is like for you and nor you they. It's got to be a rewarding experience! Thanks for your input!

I've never had one but my dad had.. It was due to a wrong letter delivered to us. Recently my uncle got married and we found out that my dad's penpal was none other than my uncle's wife's dad's cousin brother.................!

I always had penpals when I was a kid. Quite often when my folks and I went on vacation when I was younger I'd meet someone and we hit it off and became friends so we would exchange our addresses and would write to each other. One time, this one girl I met on vacation not only did we write to each other but she invited me to visit her where she lived..I was only about fourteen at the time and traveled all by myself from the NYC area where I lived to Ossining, which is a bit upstate..I had a blast...it was while I was there that we all gathered round the TV and watched the first moon landing--funny the things one remembers. As for now, I'm like you..it's more I have emailpals then penpals.

I don't happen to have a penpal, but would probably benefit from one. I used to do it in highschool with a girl from france, her name was Serani. She was such an interesting person, always so care free and full of life. She would tell me from time to time about her country and what went on in her household. She loved to paint and would describe in detail what she was painting, and what it made her feel. We lost touch after she got married, last I'd heard from her was she had triplets and was moving to italy. I really think back every now and then and wish i'd kept her address and stayed in touch, that way i'd have someone to talk to. Now I just have mylot, It would be nice to have a penpal again.

It's so interesting to talk to people from other cultures and get a glimpse into their lives. I guess people are all too busy these days to sit and write out a simple letter!

I don't currently have a penpal. The only time I did was in 5th or 6th grade, when I took French class. Everyone in the class got a penpal in France. It was pretty fun; we got to use fun stationary and send pictures of our class, and they did the same.

That sounds like a pretty neat idea actually, we were encouraged when we younger, but I could never be bothered and it's something we had to do off our own back if we wanted to! Thanks for responding!

I had one penpal when I was younger. Now I have tons of friends that I have met online. I have never met them in person but we make a point to talk at least once a week. With the technology of the internet these days it does make it hard. I would enjoy having a penpal again to write to through the mail.

I've been thinking about it for some time and even joined a penpal site, but most people just want to email, but I enjoy writing letters and think that the art of writing a letter has really left us! Not that I don't enjoy chatting with my friends online but it's not really a letter and there's nothing like anticipating a letter falling on your mat! Thanks for your response!
