Organ Donor...

Organ - Donor
United States

Ok, this is something that I have always wondered about. Say you are an organ donor. Say your doctor has a patient that is younger than you or a patient that he thinks will have a better quality at life than you. Do you think he would not try every attempt to save you, just so the other patient can have your organs????

i would seriously hope not. they take an oath to help all people so i would hate to think that they would choose one patient over another based on condition or to be able to use the organs

That is unethical and illegal.

When does the dr find out you are an organ donor? Do you tell them? Does family tell them? They haven't asked about Mama. Nor have I ever been asked. I would hope that they would help the patient fight for their life and when nothing else can be done talk to the family. Being totally honest with no false hope. I am too trusting I guess but my Daddy taught me to see good in people. He was a smart man!

Well depends, if it had been the doctors I used to go to when I lived farther north, I would have said back then that most doctors would give full and proper care to everyone who was living, and in need, and not let someone die for their organs, Now that I live in different part of the state I have learned that most docs in this area are quacks, and find that I seriously doubt their ethics and their abilities. So I do think there are docs in this area who would in fact do what they could for a patient they favored. And neglect a patient they didn't favor. Or do what ever would bring them the highest pay outs in fees from patients and insurance companies.

Quacks--you got that right. Got them in my town too, which is what lead to me asking this question. Thanks for replying.

I am sure that this has happened somewhere at some time. I dont think this is the case, but, there are crooked people in every profession. As a general rule though I dont think this would happen.

I have learned that ethics don't always matter. In any profession. I believe there are alot of doctors who would go to the full extent to save you. But on the other hand I beleive there are a few who would let you go to save another person.

i don't think that a doctor would do that...i mean if you are laying there the doctor is suppose to do everything that they can to try and save you..i mean i guess that its always a possiblity with the stories that you are hearing today but i think that it is highly unlikly that they would do something like that...but i don't think that i would want to chance it thats for sure...

If they did something like that and were caught they would be in A LOT of trouble and well it's not just the doctor's themselves that need to make the descisions they have to consult others as well, at least from what I learned but I hope like heck I never get into a situation like that.

That would be grounds for a malpractice suit. Doctors take an oath to 'first do no harm'. Of course I believe in today's world, the line for that is a little bit worn due to overzealous medical managing. I have always been an organ donor, and here is my reasoning. If something were to happen to me, I would want to make a difference for somebody, and that would be a viable way to do it.

Yes i am an organ donor. I want everthing taken that can be used to help someone else have a better life, especially if that other person is a child. And no i do not think a dr. would do that.

i like to think that the doc would do everything he could do to save me. i am an organ donor and after i had chandler and got put in the hospital mom told me that the docs did everything to save my life even though it never looked good till i woke up and to an extent it still didn't look good. so yea i like to think that they would do everything that they could.
