Going on Vacation with Friends

When I was 16 my mother, stepfather, me and a married couple who were friends of my mother went on vacation to Miami Beach, Florida. We did there things, we went on the beach all day long, went out for dinner and then went shopping every single day. The friend, I remember was not happy, she said said she wanted to go site seeing all around but it was my mother's car, but she said she was very disappointed that all my mother wanted to do was suntan and shop. Another time I was in college a few girls wanted to go to New York City but since none of us had money they wanted to get at least a group of four girls together to share the hotel room. They asked me to go but I couldn't. And I didn't particularly care for two of the 3 girls that was going. The only one I liked was Cheryl. They found the 4th person to go and off they went. When they got back I asked Cheryl if she enjoyed her stay in New York and she said no, she didn't get to see anything. All the girls wanted to do was party at night and she didn't like night clubs, or sit in the hotel room drinking and watching videos. She wanted to explore the sites. And she said if she had none that she would be spending her time in a hotel room she would have stayed home and saved her money. Have you ever gone on a vacation with someone, friend or family that just did what they wanted to do and dragged you along, but would not doing anything that you wanted to do?

Me too.. I don't recall not being able to do what I wanted to do with my friends. Usually, when we go for a vacation, we would talk then agree to the place and things that we will do. Everyone must get to do what they want. We plan ahead so that we will have extra budget and days for all of us.

I have just recently come back from a four day break with friends and they haven't children and I have. We didn't have any problems at all as we allowed each other space to do the things we wanted to do and met up afterwards. However years ago I went to Ibiza with 3 girlfriends of mine and all the wanted to do was go clubbing all night long and sleep on the beach during the day, so even though I enjoy going out I wanted to experience more so I took myself off on boat trips and went sightseeing and again met back up with them for going out in the evening. I really didn't mind being alone doing this as I got to chat to others and enjoyed my holiday. I refused to sunbathe all day just because that is what they wanted to do. It didn't really cause too many problems but I think they thought I was crazy not getting a suntan it would have caused more problems if I was on the beach all day moaning eh! LOL Ellie :D

I really admire you but I am not the kind of person that can just go off and do things by myself, I wish I was though.

Why thank you Winterose. It is a shame you can't as I find that being alone more people will chat to you. My daughter spent time in Australia with friends then went off alone to Fiji for a couple of months in her gap year and found she enjoyed her experience of having to make friends with people and it helped her overcome her shyness and gave her more self-confidence. That happened to me quite a bit. I loved the country, but mostly it was the flowers and the wild life, but I was not into the farm life. My foster mother who I went to live with when I was in my twenties, was brought up in a farm, but I was brought up in the city, and I always wanted to go see the rose gardens, the wild animals in the zoos, and what they sold in that town. She was more interested in farm stuff. I was very boring. And the same with my husband, when we went to Saskatoon, I want to go window shopping, but he wanted to stay inside, watch Tv, and when we visited his relatives, they sat down after they ate supper while I wanted to get up and move around.

That is exactly the reason that I will not go on holiday with anyone other than my own family!! We are really not the type of family that likes to go on holiday and just sit and sunbathe all day or go and drink ourselves silly at the night time, we love to explore and go places!! We have debated a few times about going on holiday with my hubbys sister and her family, but they are the sorts that like to just sit and sunbathe and totally chill out, and so I am reluctant to go with them because I just do not think that it would work out, we are all just too different.

yes way back when I was in my teens my parents used dto drag me on long vacations where all we ddid was drive a zillion miles a day then stay in a motel and drive even more miles per day. but one time in the grand tetons my dad's arthiritis caught up with him and he had to take some time off.and my mom and sis and I got to see Jackson hole and took trips on excursions up into the tetons and we saw thecountry by foot and we fished and hiked and climbed mountainsand did the things we enjoyed doing instead of just driving across the united states in two days. that was one time I reallydid like our vacation. My husband and I usedd to go out on drives but it was to see something and we enjoyed doing that.

Your mothers friend has only herself to blame because she didn't speak up and ask or talk to your mother about what she wanted to do and they could have always split and went their separate ways and meet up later if she really wanted to do other things. I have only been on vacation with the family and so I have always done what the parents wanted until I got older and then if they were time and it was planned ahead of time not just a spir of the moment thing then we would on occasion do what I wanted.

I don't remember that ever happening to me. Of course I only go with one person when I was younger and her and I liked to do the same things. We both enjoyed going around and looking at things. I don't like to go with more than one person back than and I still am the same way.

Hello Winter! Yes I've shared your experience. One summer our family went to Tennessee with another family. We were sharing a cabin and thought it would be fun, but they didn't want to do any of the things we wanted. In order to be polite, we decided to let them pick what to do and there a couple of days when they didn't want to leave the cabin at all. Well I learned the meaning of cabin fever. I decided never to do that again. Its best to take turns and share the experience and that way everyone will get to do what they want, but sadly most people are too selfish to think that way.

Usually when we go, each person has their own family with them, so it is up to each family to go where they want to go.. But most of the time, I had one sister that drove her car and took 2 of my unmarried sisters and my mom with her.. Well when the driver didn't want to go anywhere, they didn't go anywhere.. So, it was left up to the other sisters to take my mom and 2 other sisters where they wanted to go, even if they had their own plans.. It did make for hard feeling before the vacation was over, but my own family had enough sense to know to enjoy it and make it last, because it would be another year before we could do it again.. We always had fun, maybe a couple of cross words that didn't last more than a minute or two but we did have fun..
