Do you pick fleas off your pets?

I have a strange habit. I like to search for fleas on my pets, pull them off then squash them. I don't know but there is just some sense of satisfaction when I hear the 'crack' of the flea under my nail. My mother thinks it's disgusting but I've spoken to a few people about it and they admit they enjoy doing it too! I recently bought a flea comb and it's amazing how many more fleas you can get off them even if it looks like there's none on them. After I bathed my dog the other week I did a search for fleas and couldn't find any. I thought that he had absolutely no fleas but i decided to run the flea comb through his fur. I pulled out 5 or 6 big fat fleas! Does anyone else enjoy this bizarre pass time?

I must admit when I was younger I did this with our dogs. I have not done it in a long time though. I used to like to hear them pop as well. I don't know why. It is kind of gross if you think about it.

No, I can't say that I sit and pick fleas off of my pets, I have way too much to do to sit around and do that, and I sure wouldn't find it enjoyable to do even if I did have spare time to pick fleas off of them. Though I do like the idea of a flea comb getting them off of the pets.

I used to do it also, squashed the fleas, but was told that it just let the fleas multiply faster since you could be squahing the eggs invisibly into the areas. Better to put them in a container of water, that way it kills the fleas without spreading the eggs around your surroundings. I hate fleas and I dont enjoy getting them from my dogs but then once you have them its really hard to get rid of them especially comes summertime when fleas are more active than ever.

hi coffeshot, my gosh! i do the same thing to my dogs too! lol... when i was younger my grandmother would let me do the same thing to her dog. its disgusting i know but its one way of getting rid of the fleas in your dogs skin. lol... i guess i adopted what she used to do with her dog to my dog. and lol. yes, there is a sense of satisfaction when you 'squash' them. lol.. im thinking 'damn you fleas for feeding on my dogs'. lol... and i realized when you do it for a few hours it actually relieves you of your other problems haha.. is that weird? but it does for me. on weekends when i would do this to my dog and then give them a bath a few mins after. then while they are still a little bit wet, i would search some more. its a little bit easier that way since they are wet and the fleas cant move around anymore, after that id dry my dogs off. but when i cant give them a bath i would just let them lie on a table and search for fleas and i find it so cute that the more i search my dogs would just eventually fall asleep. hahahaha... they wouldnt mind if i move him left or right from one side to another while on the table searching, they would just sleep. lol

I use that "Advantage" on my dog,so i have not had a flea problem, however my dog would scratch like crazy,so i kept looking for fleas,i pulled her hair back and looked everywhere....What I found was a rash ,little red tiny bumps....So i am trying a cream...Had i found fleas i would have killed them ....My mother in law had 2 small dogs and she used to look for fleas ans crush them like you do........

Hi coffeshot! Oh, I do the same thing. I just really like it when I crash the fleas. Even I know to some, it is disgusting but I still do it anyway. However, nowadays I have only picked up smaller ones. It is more fun when I get the big fat fleas. haha.. Just my thoughts dear friend! Take care and have a nice day!

I haven't done that in a long time I buy my dogs and cat flea medication. The frontline plus that way I don't have to worry about the fleas getting in the house. LOL!! But I remember doing that yep.

I used to do this all the time to mine too, when I had pets! They can take some squashing though sometimes, and the bigger ones can make a right mess if you squash them and they have just eaten!!

Omg! So I am not alone! I have the same habit you do, but have not heard of the flea comb. I love to just start petting my dog and well automatically begin feeling around with my fingers for ticks or fleas! I check my dogs so regularly that I haven't found then to have anything for quite a while and I don't see them scratching either which is a good sign. I like that my dogs are clean and do feel quite happy and proud but secretly I sometimes feel just a tiny bit disappointed when I don't find anything on them. I know that is weird! There is just some sort of satisfaction that accompanies this as you said. But in the end, I'm just happy that my dog is nice and clean!

Your pets shouldn't have fleas in the first place.
