We have a movie on DVD called Dante’s Peak. It’s about a dormant volcano that becomes active and wipes out a thriving town. We have several natural disaster movies like this. Ice, Daylight, Twister, Day After Tomorrow and a few more. We both like these movies…not b/c we like natural disaster’s but b/c of the amount of action in them.
We saw one a long time ago that was so great. It was called On Hostile Ground and was about a huge cavern under New Orleans. I have searched all over but for some reason it’s not on DVD. I’d love to get that one. They have 2 movies with the same name though so you really have to look for it.
What are your favorite ones? Do you like these kinds of movies? What do you think makes ppl like to watch these types of movies?

I remember those movies. I just saw Dantes Peak recently. Twister is a good one too. I remember Charlton Heston did several disaster movies. Several years ago Houston had a massive flood and a tv movie was made of it. I also saw a movie recently I think was called the Day afyer Tomorrow, where the weather has changed every thing. I've always be attracted to these movies, dont know why.

I love movies and documentaries about natural disasters. Mother nature is one force we will never control, much like rebellious teenagers, but wow! the displays she can put on are amazing!
We have been watching a series on tele called Seconds From Disaster, and at the moment, it is all about the force of Mother Nature and how the clues to these disasters were there if us mere humans had bothered to take a better look!
I love the movie Volcano starring Tommy Lee Jones. He's a great actor and the scenario was so out there it was believeable that it could happen one day.

I haven't really seen much nature videos, my boyfriend just loves them. I love the shrek and he harry potter and the lord of the rings series, I am just crazy of these things. Don't ask me why, because normally I am not interested in children's movies.

I do like them also but can't imagine why.. The whole time that I am watching, I am figuring out how to get out of the mess, how I would get out of it.. I always go to higher ground first thing, but usually you just can't get out of them.. I have never heard of the last one that you mentioned but have seen the other ones and loved them.. I imagine it is because of the amount of action in them that gets us every time.. They are engrossing to watch..

I really liked the special effects of the movie "the day after tomorrow".. I guess I do like disaster films.. or especially end of the world type scenarios.. Kind of weird, actually! Not sure why..

Movies with natural disasters is quite a popular genre. The conflict of man versus nature is a common theme. Furthermore, the victory of the human spirit over insurmountable odds, considering the fury of mother's nature, is both exciting and heartwarming for us viewers.
I liked Dante's Peak, and if you enjoyed it, you should check Volcano, with pretty much the same disaster. Twister was fun and Day After Tomorrow was enthralling.
The threat of total annihilation would usually bring a group of people together, and using human ingenuity and courage, overcome and survive. I think that is the main appeal of movies like these. That in the end, no matter how bad, man or mankind will find a way to live.

I happen to like these types of movies and I actually have all the ones you have listed there
except for "Ice". I haven't heard of that one but might have to check into it, I did a search but didn't find it. I hadn't heard of the one you mentioned called "On Hostile Ground" either but I did look it up, the reason it's so hard to find is due to it being a made for tv movie. The write up for it though makes it sound very good.
I have several others here as well that are like those. "Cliffhanger", "The Poseidon Adventure", and "On Deadly Ground" to name a few. My favorite though is "Volcano" with Tommy Lee Jones. It came out the same year as "Dante's Peak" but it deals with a volcano showing up in the middle of LA. It's a great movie. They took a rare natural event and made it into a movie. I like it when it is plausible events behind such things.
I'm not sure why we like them. The action and comedy is usually pretty good in them but it's more then that. It's man over coming mother nature, no matter what she throws at them. It makes us think anything is possible.

I love watching those disaster movies... there is nothing like watching mother nature putting the whammy on people and breaking all of their toys.
I loved the unabashed political statement that they tried making in "Day After Tomorrow" where they were trying to say that man and the Kyoto Accord could actually stave off climate change and global warming.
Anyone with even half a brain knows better than that.
The Kyoto Accord has been found to be an abject failure, and man has very little to do with any climate change.
Despite the political undertones it is still a good movie.

I love that movie also. I like those movies that can happen in real life. I don't own Dante's Peak myself as i've seen it that many times i know it off by heart. I think people like watching the natural disaster movies as it can happen. As you can guess i like real life movies none with aliens or things like that. But yeah have a great day.

These are some of my favourite type of films also, I'm always watching the documentaries of real life natural disasters also! Not sure why, it's not that I relish in the fact that people are harmed or homes destroyed, but in a way makes you grateful that you're not involved, and makes you think how lucky we are?

I like the Day After Tomorrow because it is almost believable (well some of it). We are making such a mess of the environment that you can believe that one day the earth is going to say "that's enough".
I also like those asteroid hitting the earth and end of civilization as we know it films. Armageddon is a favourite, made better with great music to go with it.

We watch those kind of movies, they are interesting to see what happens in a disaster..And if the director/producer does their homework, you can learn a few things in case you get stuck in a tornado or earthquake..
