Eating healthy has been the focus of much attention over the past couple of years, and while I will agree that some of the foods we get from restaurants is not the most wholesome, I have to stress that the decision to eat these foods ultimately rests with us. We don't have to buy into the "supersize" everything hype. We can choose a healthy salad over foods laden with fats. I found an interesting article from Men's Health that could apply to everyone. http://health.yahoo.com/experts/eatthis/139/the-20-worst-foods-in-america/;_ylt=ApzLQFoy5kCf5NOyNp4sg4rX3JV4 The main thing that we should remember when dining out is to use common sense! A common practice with me when I buy take-out food is to divide it into more than one meal because it is usually more than I can eat at one time anyway. How do you keep the calories down when eating out or dining in on take-out food?

Well sweetheart I don't eat an awful lot so I very rarely eat a whole meal - I think that helps as for what I eat , I am a great believer in a little of what you fancy does you good! lol Having said that I cannot believe some of the dishes in that link - they are more than unhealthy they are a health threat! xxx

That makes sense worldwise although we all deserve to treat ourselves sometimes! xxx

My mother always used to say, mummymo, that after a lifetime of eating everything you want it shouldn't be too much of a sacrifice to eat healthier as you get older. I am earnestly trying to practice what she preached.

I also divide the portions and make more than one meal out of it. Studies have show most restaurant portions are at least twice as much as we actually should be eating and all these years I thought I just wasn't a big eater...lol! I've also started getting more healthy things like salads and broiled or grilled chicken and I've been skipping the fries at least most of the time. You're so right, it's all about common sense and I'd add moderation. Annie

We should certainly use moderation in all things, anniepa. My eating habits have changed quite a bit over the last few years. In the past I didn't care if what I ate was good for me, but now my attitude has matured.

a doctor once told me that if I ate a burger, or slice of pizza to consider that my bread count for the entire day. Also choose salad over french fries, baked potatoes are acceptable without all the margarine or toppings.

I use the same tactic as you do really. I have never been a big eater, so the portions I get from restaurants are enough for at least two meals and often quite a bit (mexican and chinese food) come to mind. I will usually eat until I am full, box up the rest and take it home to eat later. In that respect, for me at least eating out is not all that expensive either, granted I may spend $10-20 on a meal, but I'll get 2-4 meals from it. Since I live alone, if I do something crazy like make spagetti, one pot will last me like a week. I usually get tired of eating it long before the leftovers run out, so I don't make those types of foods that often. But I digress...

You are probably like me also, filmbuff, in that I don't like to waste food. Having cooked for a medium-sized family for years, I still sometimes tend to cook too much. Whenever possible I will divide the food into portions and freeze for later. It cuts down on so much cooking too!

I don't get any of those foods, though the Outback Steakhouse Aussie Cheese Fries without the dressing sounds delicious right now..

I am weak for any dish that contains cheese, carmelanirel! Needless to say, it goes directly to my hips.
