Making friends

As an adult how do you make new friends. Work is a great place to start but outside of that where? If your kids aren't old enough for activities and you're already friends with the people you work with where can you meet other people? I have come across people at say the grocery store and thought wow she was really nice but what do you do say here's my number call me? Thanks in advance for the suggestions!
