Dumb question #1 - why do women cover their face?

It's not a dumb question flowerchilde, It is good to discus this hijab thing of musleem women. I am a musleem too but i don't use hijab. But i can understand them, they only want to be close to their God. Nuns also using hijab to remind her self everyday that every day i am at God way and do all my act inside of it, and want to keep remind them self every day this way. As simple as that. Remember mother Teresa? she used it too at the same reason.

Myself a Muslim. Some interpret the Islamic teaching to cover full body of a woman, I don't disagree with it. but I suggest to cover body excluding face & arms. Wives of Prophet were covering their whole body. Quran says to chose the dress that keep modest, and to draw veils over the chest. Prophet advices to woaman cover body excluding face & fore-arms. All ladies in my family members excluding kids cover their body excluding face & fore-arms while they goes out. It is not a matter of suppression, it's their own choice in the same way as accepting other teachings of Islam or islam itself.

Maybe they are so ugly that is the only way to get a husband. Then once they are married the husband insists on keeping a sack over their heads to stop other men feeling sorry for them having married such a horror. Haha. Only joking! Now don't start a fatwa against me!

I sat next to a woman at the Dr's. office a few months ago. It was so hot out. She was covered in all black all you could see were her eyes, which I didn't dare even look into for fear she would feel uncomfortable. Almost everyone in the busy waiting room was staring at her especially the children. She sat next to me and of course my grandson had to be the one to yell out "what's that Grandma?". I just wanted to hug her... Honestly there is no need to go to that degree. Not allowing her to choose to cover is extremism if you ask me. I'm grateful that the Bible has taught me to do things in moderation.

first of all , it is not a dumb question. only a few knows why muslim women cover their faces , it is because of their culture. they are not allowed to be seen by any man. it is not only their faces that are covered but also the whole body . they are not allowed to show any flesh. sorry, it is not because of modesty.

Hi There. The women there are not allowed to be seen by other men except their husband without covering their whole body and face. That is according to a friend of mine who is a Muslim. Also, they treat the women as a second class people in their society.

from some of what I have read the women have to cover their face in public because their face and their body shape might cause a man to have impure thoughts and cause the man to sin. I have also read that the young girls learn to convey a lot with their eyes.

I really do not know why,i am not that religion...I see them as well with their faces covered,i have no idea why...I also see these women with some type of robe on and a big spot or jewel between their eyes...Maybe someone here that knows will let us know....

Yeah I agree with the other responses. It is mostly because of religion. I have also read or seen a Muslim ladie speak about it and say that it is not true that they would be punished for not covering their faces .. And that they choose to do it because it is a part of their religion and customs. I am not completely sure about the part where whether or not they would be punished if they DID NOT they covered up their body. However, I do remember that the part about the lady saying that she did it because she chose to and it was part of her religion .. That is definatly true.
