How do you slice up your mangoes? What is the best way to slice them off of the pit and not waste so much of the wonderful fruit?my father had a way of doing it, and he was very proficient, though he is no longer around to teach me.
the grocery has mangoes on sale this week and I wish to get a few cases and preserve them, but not if I end up wasting more than saving due to not knowing how to cut them off of the pit.

Take a sharp knife and score / cut round the stone lengthways. Take a spoon and wedge / wiggle it into the cut you have made, feeling for the stone, and try to follow the contour of the stone.
With some persistent wiggling of the spoon you should be able to lever the mango in half with the stone attached to one half of the fruit. Using the spoon again follow the contour of the stone around this half and "scoop" the stone out of the fruit.
You should now have to halves of the mango and no stone (best way to ensure you get the most fruit is to suck the stone!).
I would then score lengthways and widthways the flesh in each half, and then turn the fruit inside out on itself so the cube fruit stands up like a hedgehog effect. It should then be easy to cut cleanly from the skin in cubes.
I hope you understand what I have just tried to describe. It makes sense in my head, but I'm not sure if I have clearly said what I mean.
Happy eating :)

It is how my father recommended it to me. It is his favourite fruit. I hope it works out for you.

Hello, hmmm...you make me miss mango, This is just everywhere in the Philippines but here way too expensive and different type. Anyway, i use to slice it lengthwise then after dividing it both sides, will make opposite sliced to come up with cubes...hmmmmmmm....love it!

I just peel mine and then slice mango off of it until I hit the pit. My son likes to take the mango pit and eat the mango off of it, so in this house it does not go to waste. I have seen these things at Bed Bath and Beyond that are made just to do mangoes. It is pretty cool looking, but it is like $15. I passed on it.

Mangoes..Oh how i love mangoes....we grew them in our backyard back in the Philippines... I love making Mango Float with lots and lots of sweet yellow mangoes. I agree with the other mylotters about slicing the mangoes...slice it lengthwise making sure you are near the seed. Slice both sides...and scoop out with spoon...yum yum! I have pictures of mangoes from home but i dont know how to add them here :(

I needed to know this very thing a few days ago! I made my husband a protein shake/smoothie. We always add fruit to it. He chose mango this time. I had the hardest time cutting that thing up! I don't think it was ripe enough either.
I remember Mangos being much softer and sweeter inside.

I think you have to have a certain number of posts before mylot allows you to upload images. This is why you don't have it on your screen yet.
Yes, I just opened up the FAQ in a new window. You have to reach 500 posts, then you will be able to add pictures.
