Whats with the cell phone tunes?

Have I missed something? I travel on the train regularly and all the time the cell phones are going off, which is ok but whats with the weird, loud, ridiculous tunes that people go out of their wauy to have on there phones.
I mean is it really neccessary that your phone sings' its the wife, its the wife' or a tune from Star Wars, or a stupid hen crowing, what is it all about? I would really be happy to be enlightened - because I certainly dont get it. What does it give people who have these strange call sounds, dont they know how they sound and what it says about them.
There should be some research done on profiling the ring tones to match the owners of the phones. Whats wrong with a simple, ring tone! What am I missing?

A lot of people like to have different ringtones on their phone so that in a crowded room they know that it is their phone ringing and not the person sitting next to them. In a loud and crowded place I can see why someone would want a loud and distinct ringtone.

Thanks for that, I didnt get that - simple really, but some of those ring tones are really weird - guess it suits some .
