Can you play the guitar, how did you learn how to play?

I am fascinated with learning the guitar at the moment. My partner last night showed me how to play a few chords. I actually managed to play a couple of chords, beginners luck. I am a bit impatient though I want to learn how to play a song straight away. It is quite hard trying to use the tips of your fingers, my poor little fingers get dents in them after playing, lol. I am going to book in for private lessons with a music teacher, next week, I can't wait. I love singing too, so will be good when I can play some tunes and sing along at the same time. Be a while yet before that will happen. So anyone here play the guitar? How did you first learn how to play? Any tips, or great sites, greatly appreciated.

HI kiran-I used to play the classical guitar years ago but taught myself and I also have had singing lessons, so it was really good there were many songs I used to play and sing on the guitar-the one I loved to play and sing to was 'memories' its such a lovely song. Unfortunatley you will have to learn the cords first your fingertips will harden after a while the more you play.blessings my friend littleowl

I can't remember! Wil let you know when I do! It's A beautiful song though have you heard of it? But you will have to be patient for a while but in the end it is worth the wait when ou can finally start playing songs some of the chords are easy to learn and you wil be able to play a few simple songs-all good things are worth waiting for and you have chosen one of them-I did sing etc with the choir (when I was a christian) and was with a musical in the uk, germany and usa-blessings littleowl

Thanks for the advice littleowl I think I am tring to learn too many things at once with the guitar like chords, strumming, rhythm, I just need to focus on the chords first like you said. You must be pretty talented, singing and guitar. Who sings memories?

You are right I think I have picked a good thing, can't wait to get some lessons as I don't learn very well by looking at books. Take care, appreciate your responses, as always.

Hello Kiran, I do play the guitar. I think I started learning right around the age of 12. I have calluses now so no more dents in the fingers for me:D Haha. You will get there, you just have to practice lots! If you do practice lots at first, then you will notice, your fingers wont hurt, you will remember things a lot easier, and that you will satisfy your teacher! I am more into rock and stuff, but im not sure with you. But yah just keep trying, try to at least practice for maybe 30-90 minutes a day(the more the better) and then before you know it you will be on stage! Haha jk, but keep trying! I wish you the best of luck!

Don't like the sound of calluses, my friend was just telling me about that the other day. I don't mind rock music, I love ACDC, " You Shook me all Night Long." Other then rock music I also like pop and R&B. I will try and practice 30-90 minutes a day, thanks for the great tips. But I will wait till I have had my 1st lesson first as I don't want to practice with bad habits want to learn the correct technique. That would be awesome being on stage, I wish, lol.

Haha, yah maybe wait for the lesson, it sound like a good idea! Yah some of those rock songs are hard so its good you are learning the other stuff... Which is really hard at points and tricky! I hope you have fun learning, and remember the first lesson is always the worst!!

I learned how to play from community college. Later when I went to college, I played in the guitar ensemble. I liked the Hal Leonard books for beginners too, but I'd really recommend a class at least to start out. I don't sing, so I play classical guitar. I wish I knew some other people who played guitar because my favorite things to play are trios.

When I went for lessons, guitar class was 1 unit at community college. So it only cost me $11 for a little over 10 weeks of lessons. Not bad at all, definitely check out community college courses. :) But the book should definitely get you going in the right direction.

Maybe you could start it up too, I always wanted to play too, so I thought I would bite the bullet and give it a go. My resoloution this year is to try new things and get more hobbies. I'll let you know how I go. Wow your posts are multiplying by the day, you are a busy lady. How's your payout looking this month? I think I might just scrape in there, sitting on $9.78, need 22cents, find out in one more hour, lol.

Maybe I will one day, although I cannot sing so I would not be doing any sing songs with the family!!! Its all my friends that keep me busy with all the discussions they are all posting, I have to keep up with them!! Payout is ok, I am pretty pleased, I have just had mine updated for the last time this month and I will get $41.32, which is roughly about £20.00 in english money, so not too bad really. Fingers crossed that you get what you need for payout!!

You have already mentioned your weak point here....IMPATIENT. Guitar is one such musical instrument among a hundred others where its a tough time getting through without patience. You interest to learn it will however help you along a long way. I have been playing on the guitar since three years by now and I had the same feeling as you have right now. As a a tip I'd suggest you to keep a concentration on the chords and forget all about the rhythm by now. Learn to shift from one chord to the other. When you are quite good at doing this, shift upon the rhythm. I took around six months to learn it but it was worth the pain. For reference go to www.all-guitar-chords.com. All the best Kiran! Hope to listen to a beautiful guitar play from you soon.

Hi kiran!! Its really good to hear that you are learning to play the guitar. I love playing the guitar. It really takes practice. I remember as a young boy holding the guitar trying to play D chord. It was really irritating cause no sound would come out. I gave up. But after a few year I started again with some of my friends. This time I stuck to it. Now I am glad to have spent those long hours in the night practicing. Keep practicing. Remember you have to be patient!! Have fun !! :)

Hey, good luck with that! I tried to learn to play about a decade ago. Did some lessons, bought a couple of picks and playbooks and "how to" cd's. Unfortunately, that didn't work out for me. Don't get me wrong, I practiced and practiced but I think my fingers were just too set in their ways that it was difficult for me to do the chords. Good luck, again. I hope you start rockin' in no time.

Thanks, hope I will be rockin too, who knows maybe you might see me on Video Hits on Tv, lol, with my own band. (Just Kidding). I wish, maybe if I started playing as a kid I might have had a shot, now I am 29 years old, think i will have to stick playing a guitar as a hobbie and for enjoyment.

Hi there Kiran! I know how to play the basic chords and luckily, I found songs that needs just those basic chords. I am not really good with it and I learned by myself with the help of a chord chart. My husband is good though. He used to be the lead guitarist of their band where my uncle was the lead vocalist and that's how I met him.

Cool good to hear you are learning the guitar too. I had a good go of playing the guitar last night, my partner showed me heaps more chords. I learnt how to play a Nickleback song, feels good that I can kind of play a song, still rusty of course, but it sounds like the song, he he. There is this really cool internet site that gives you the chords to the songs and if you forget how to play the chord you put cusor on chord and it shows you where to put your fingers. Here is the website if you want to have a look www.ultimate-guitar.com

I sometimes play but not very good at it. There are alot of instructional videos on how to read tablatures; it's a guide on proper placing of the fingers and stuff. I have some saved in my computer it's like a music sheet, just copy and paste it to notepad and i go back to it whenever i feel like playing again

I usually learned to play the guitar since high school, it is just so great because I get the opportunity to learn how to play it with a little help from some of my friends who were really experts on it. As time goes by, I have noticed that I am slowly learning to play the guitar all by myself. I guess it is because of self motivation and my innermost desire to be able to learn to play it. I have also been very patient and perseverant enough because I think those are the key to success. and most of all just enjoy what you are doing and you will notice that as time goes by, you are learning how to play it all by yourself and learn to love it with all of you... ^_^

Sounds like you are very passionate about playing the guitar, that is great to know that you taught yourself. I guess there is hope for me, I keep thinking I need to pay for all these lessons to learn how to play the guitar. I think perserverence and patience are very important like you said when playing the guitar.

I can play guitar and bass guitar, its not hard if its something you really want to learn. I bought a guitar book and did enough lessons to learn the basic chords and took off from there. I play and sing alot at different churches, I know enough to get me by for myself. All I can say is that it takes practice, practice, practice and patience on your part, and taking lessons from someone will help you alot, its better if you have someone actually showing you what to do. Yeah, your fingers will get sore, but after awhile you'll start getting callouses and it won't hurt so much anymore, thats what happened to me. One of these days, your fingers will automatically go where they are supposed to on the fretboard, you'll be able to play with your eyes closed..lol. Heres a website that I found to be helpful. It has lessons on it, and basic stuff you need to know about guitars. http://guitar.about.com/library/bluguitarlessonarchive.htm
