I've heard that children in western countries desert their parents when they turn 18. Why is that ??

Of course I respect my parents. They SHOULD be on the TOP of your respect list! And SOME kids NOT ONLY in the western world DO disrespect their parents. not just them, everyone else, so it seems. Which is a big shame.

What do you mean by "desert"? If you mean leave them without ever returning, you are mistaken about children in western countries. If you mean moving out, getting their own place and living on their own....some do, most don't. It is too hard to do that, as most 18 year olds can not afford the expense. No matter if it is the child or the parent, most people have a real hard time dealing with the fact that they will not be together in the same house forever. It is called growing up and becoming an adult. It is one of the things that a good parent can teach his/her children. It is part of being a successful adult. We don't "desert" our parents, we just grow up and become responsible for our own lives.

I'm a Srilankan, like you and I really respect my parents, I dont see why we should'nt respect them, it is they who looked after us when we were kids right?
