Computer keyboards 'filthier than toilet seats'

Research in the UK has found that some computer keyboards harbour more harmful bacteria than a toilet seat. British consumer group Which? said tests at its office identified equipment carrying bugs that could cause food poisoning. Out of 33 keyboards swabbed, four were regarded as a potential health hazard and one harboured five times more germs than the office's toilet seats. The company's John Bogue says one keyboard had 150 times the recommended limit for bacteria. "We're looking at the coliform type of bugs," he said. "The ones people are familiar with are E coli and Staphylococcus aureus." "It could give you a similar thing to food poisoning - diarrhoea, vomiting, that sort of thing." http://au.news.yahoo.com/080501/21/16p4w.html You may want to think twice about eating food while typing on your keyboard. You are either contaminating your keyboard... or eating the germs on your keyboard.

i can understand this one.. i sometimes munch while typing and yes.. i know it can be really messy. so i clean it afterwards. the last i heard though was that toilet seats are even cleaner than chopping boards. hehe but of course that is a different topic. :D

None of this surprises me. Every time studies are done on seemingly inanimate objects they are always teeming with germs and bacteria...so why would keyboards be any different. I am not the type who eats at my keyboard as a rule. I like to be 'present' when enjoying a meal and keying and staring at my monitor and woofing food down with one hand or the other is not something I can envision. After being reminded of the germs on the keyboard it will certainly dissuade me if the idea ever does walk across my busy brain...UGH! Raia

I'm not surprised. Some friends of mine have kids, and the amount of food in their keyboard is unbelievable. Doesn't help that the way keyboards are designed makes it hard to clean them properly. You can use compressed air to blow dirt out, or a small vacuum to suck it up, but actually sterilizing it is a different story.
