Is reading really for nerds?

I love to read, even when I was really young, I already loved to read. I started on the Sweet Valley Books and eventually progressed on to more mature reads. But every time other people see me reading, they'd tell me that I was becoming a really big nerd, even when I was reading a love story, I was still branded a nerd. Even now, I still hear other people saying that people who love to read are very boring and have nothing else to do with their lives. I so disagree with this because reading is like an adventure, where you go to new places and meet different people and explore out-of-this-world ideas. What do you say? Am I really a nerd?

No , they are the ones who are nerds! There is nothing wrong with reading. You are becoming smarter and are aquiring knowledge while they are getting stupider!! I hate when people peg people as something just because they are doing something different from them...Ignore them, they are idiots. You do what you want to do and ignore what people think!

Wow, thanks. You're right. If those guys want to remain ignorant, that's up to them. And it's up to me if I want to become smarter. Thanks for your assurance. I'm actually reading a book right now, it's Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. So far so good. I'm loving it. :)

Hi tobi_brown, Reading doesn't make anyone a nerd. I'm sure that those who called you a nerd had no idea what they were missing by not reading themselves. There are thousands of libraries where people borrow books all the time, also hundreds of book stores which make good profits, I'd say those who don't read are the nerds. They probably spend their time gossiping. Blessings.

Reading does not make you a nerd. Reading is one of the most pleasurable and relaxing things a person can do. I love to read and when I do, I feel like I am visiting another place and time. When I get into a good book, I get lost in it. My daughter also loves to read. Her love of reading has made her want to become an author. She has already started on two books, one of which she plans to make into a manga.

Well being called nerd has nothing to do with reading books. even i like reading books a lot and most of the times you come to my house you will find me either on net or with a book reading. But if you only read and never give time to your friends they may start calling you nerd. Thus you should always take out time for your friends. If it is reading you like then talk about books you may always learn more, for while you are reading one book he is reading another and in the end one who knows about them both is the one who gets the most out of reading and knowledge. If you will share the stories and knowledge you get from reading with others who are not intersted in reading then you may gain their goodwill but only if you do it as a art and not just boring them outright.

Reading is a wonderful thing and a way to open up new worlds and experiences to you. Anyone that says you are a nerd is just very close minded. My son is 4 and we love to read together. He even likes to read on his own. Ok, he doesn's actually read but he will look at the pictures and tell you a story. I hope he always has a love of reading because it is a wonderful escape and great way to learn about things that are new to you.

If your son keeps up his "reading," I'll bet he will grow up to be a really wise young man.

Well if you are a nerd for reading, then guess what? So am I. I love to read, you are right it opens up whole new worlds and we get to go to all these new places and be all these different people and live a life that is out of this world. People who judge only do so because they have never tried it themselves or they have no imagination that brings a book to life when they read. Hey, I love being a nerd!!

Yes, you are right. I may have been called a nerd for loving to read, but that's not my problem anymore. Thank you, you are such an assurance.

You're not a nerd =) Reading is possibly one of the most enjoyable and entertaining things to do - and you can do it anywhere at any time. It is an adventure - and I honestly think that people who make comments like that are just jealous because they can't have that same enjoyment and experience and don't derive the same joy from literature. Some people just like to try to make others stop doing what they enjoy so that they are unhappy too, you know what I mean. Keep on reading it and loving it, and if we're nerds, then so be it! =D

Reading makes you a nerd? My, times have changed! I love to read and always have. I still go to the library and along with my Mom we come home with a bag full of books! Besides that, I have about 300 myself. I wouldn't know what to do if I couldn't read. I think these silly people are just jealous! I hope you always love to read. I know I certainly will.

Not all people love to read and those who don't love to read are usually the ones call book lovers nerd. Reading books gives us many pieces of information. And because of that, book lovers have something that other don't have and they call them nerds. Other people won't easily relate to book lovers that they call them boring, nerds, etc. But of course, we have to allot time also being with friends to enjoy with them the things we have learned from the books we have read. It has a little possibility being called a nerd if you can relater what you are reading with the people around you.

No offense just an honest opinion. :) you are a nerd. Reading is part of being nerd, you want to learn using your brain and imagination. Average people now are fun of watching movies instead of reading it. :) Anyway whats wrong being a nerd, you should be proud of it that people call you a nerd. Without this Nerd guys Internet is not possible and also this site does not exist.

i don't think you are a nerd if you can still balance the every day needs of your life. also, i think you're not boring, not unless you keep your mouth shut all the time and cannot relate well to conversation, now, that one is boring..=)

Well, if reading is what causes nerdiness then I am one as well. I started reading really young and I love it. It has kept me from going stir-crazy so many times waiting at appointments or for kids or while in the hospital etc. It also helps to fall asleep at nite. I always have a good book where ever I go.

People who are bright and intellectual are readers. It takes no concentration to sit down and watch television. You're right. Reading is like going on an adventure. I read to my three kids from the time they were infants. All three are avid readers today, and none of them are nerdy! People like to label other people when they don't understand what the person is doing. It seems some insecure people are only comfortable if everyone they know does what they do. If they see you reading, and they aren't readers, it's human nature to make you feel like an outcast or nerd. Remember, noone can make you feel anything. We're all responsible for our thoughts and perceptions. If they want to label you nerdy, it's not important to you. You don't need to worry or care about what other people think. Trust me, you're not nerdy. Wouldn't it be nice if your friends read a book or two and discovered the delight of being transported to another world?

Of course not. People who read know more than people who not read. Even Bill clinton read if he had some spare time. All legendary people like presidents or prime minister etc read lots of book to increase their knowledge. are they nerds? i always encouraged people I know to read. Its open and widen your horizon.

Well, I guess I am a HUGE nerd then. I've always read, and I enjoy reading. Whether it's the humor of a good author, or just a good story, a lot of stories suck me in. The people who choose to read are usually the ones with the good ability to read. I would honestly have to say nerd has become the norm these days anyways. I would rather not label, but I don't know what else to call it. Since the newest wave of video games, people, pretty much only teenagers, have started to use the language that people used to use for fun in video games. As in noob, pwn, etc. I would definitely NOT say people who read books are nerds. In a way, I don't really care if I am called a geek or a nerd. There's all sorts of geeks and nerds out there. From book nerds to sports geeks, you name it and it's just another word for someone who likes to do something.

I don't think so! I myself loves to read very much. You're correct in saying that reading is like an adventure. I developed my love for reading eversince when i was a kid. I would read almost all kinds of reading materials. Reading makes me go to places i won't ever had a chance to go in reality. Sometimes i feel that the people in a book i am reading are close to my heart that when the story ends, i feel sad and i missed them already. Reading widens our knowledge especially about people in other countries
