A teen home sick from school heard someone breaking into her home. She runs upstairs and hides under the blankets on her bed. Using her cell phone she texts her mom about the break in. Not letting anyone hear her talk. Mother calls 911 AND RACES HOME.
Guess this goes in the pro column for the kids and cell phone argument...

A friend of mine recently reported a daylight break-in at his house as well. I'm not sure what to make of it. Are criminals getting bolder? Is this just a coincidence? Perhaps so.
As to the teen, I think she was really very clever. You can call 911 yourself, but then you'd have to speak – which might give away your presence. We would like to think that the criminals would have run if they heard anyone in the home.
However, I also know of another story when someone broke into a house and then found someone there sleeping. This particular criminal attacked the sleeping person quite viciously. Strangely, he was unable to kill the victim by either lack of ability or lack of will. He wound up calling 911 for the victim.
This also brings up a question. Should we consider adding a text-911 service, too? I wonder how much that would cost? I guess it wouldn't be useful very often. Another trick you can pull is to dial 911 from a land-line phone. If they do not hear anyone talking on the other end, they have to send a police man to the house. (At least I think so.)
