Allegedly two men have been charged with second-degree burglary after they and a teenager were trying to bust a dog out of the city pound for its owner's memorial service.
The mixed-breed dog, Luke, was picked up April 22 while roaming the streets of the tiny Carter County community of Wilson. One day later, his owner, 53-year-old Saundra Vickers, died from health complications, a Police officer said.
A rumor began spreading that authorities planned to euthanize Luke. So early Sunday, the trio broke into the pound in an attempt to free the dog.
During the break-in, it was said they turned off security lights and cut the lock at the pound with wire cutters.
The goal of the trio was to allow Luke to attend his owner's memorial service later that day. But they were cught by a Wilson officer who saw them as they tried to leave the pound with the dog.
"The door to the pound was wide open and there was a guy with the dog in his arms," Hernandez said. "The guy said that his dog had run away and he found him sitting in front of the pound. The officer knew the dog had been picked up (and) that the guy wasn't the dog's owner."
As it turns out, Hernandez said, authorities had no plans to put Luke to sleep. He said Vickers' family understood that as soon as a fence was built to contain Luke, the dog would be returned to the family.
Two of the trio posted bail after being booked into the county jail. They were formally charged Monday, records show.
The teenaager was cited and released to his mother.

Good grief talk about a farce! I think it is really sweet that they wanted the dog at his owners memorial but surely they could have tried to persuade workers at the pond to let them take him and not break in causing damage and upsetting the other dogs! xxx

In its own way this is kind of sweet, but they really should have got their facts right before trying to take the law into their own hands, the dafties!! I admire what their intentions were but if they had sat and thought it through then there would have been no need for their drastic actions. But at least they know that the dog is not going to be put down, and if they do as they are asked then the dog will be returned. Good story though.

Hi. cinderella2007 I think that this is very sad and cute. But they should not have stolen, the dog. This only landed them into more trouble. I know that they want to show respect for the owner, but they got themselves into hot water at the same time.
