This bear was being treated for a skin condition. The medication caused his skin to turn a beautiful shade of purple. No it is not a hoax, but it was just temporary. http://www.nwbotanicals.org/mediawatch/purplebear.htm

wow! what a striking color! it looks like a purple jelly bean! how pretty, but the color makes the bear not look as cuddly (not that polar bears ARE cuddly - but that they generally look it when soft and white fluff covers their body)

That is exactly what I said, it looks like a fur teddy bear. But it is very real and kind of cute in purple.

That's a first for me. If it was permanent, they should let him out for Easter and call him the "Easter Bear." He could help kids find easter eggs!

An Easter bear would be cute. But there is only one problem. Most kids are afraid of humans in animal costumes, what do you think they would do if a real purple bear got close to them, LOL.

That is an amazing photo. It's not the skin that turned purple but the fur of the polar bear. It does look strangely beautiful. Did you know that all polar bears have black skin underneath their fur? The fur is not really white but made up of transparent hollow hairs. If the bears are kept in warmer climates they can get algae growing inside the hollow hairs, which gives them a green tint.
