You Can Check In But Can You Check Out?...

We have a movie called The Colony. It’s a great movie. In it a family moves into a gated community, the community has it’s own school, stores, doctors, vets, security and everything. All goes well for awhile until the family learns that they have secret cameras throughout the house they’ve bought and when they decide they want to leave they find out that The Colony is like a roach motel, you can check in but you can’t check out.
I’ve lived in a gated community once and it was kind of hard to get used to. You can’t get in without the proper id card and a photo comparison and no one else can get in unless you authorize it. I guess it’s safer especially in today’s world. If I had kids and could afford to live in one, I probably would. I’d check it out really well though.
Would you live in one? Have you ever? Do you think with all the crime today that it’s better to live in one of these?

I live in a gated community, but we don't have any stores or schools here, just a lodge where we can rent to have parties and stuff..I hate it because the people are not really nice, though the are a couple of really good people, everyone else are just snubs..They are not friendly and since this is a community, you would think a friendly wave or how are you once in a while would be the norm, but instead they are backstabbing..I have one neighbor who many times have tried to get us kicked out because she has so much money, she thought it would be good to use it against us..But greater in us than he that is in the world, each time, though it looked grim in the beginning, her plans failed..

Oh I forgot the most important thing, the safety feature here is not any better than outside..We had many break ins recently and they had caught the guy a couple months ago and he lived out here..So you are never that safe, your next door neighbor could be a thief or a serial killer, you never know..

That sounds like a good movie! Right up my alley as I like suspense and mystery.. I think a gated community if you have children could be excellent!

Haven't seen the movie--sounds cool.
Now, the question at hand... not sure, kind of torn if I'd live in such a community or not. I'm kind of a loner, so I think I'd prefer to live beyond MY OWN walls and fences, you know? But right now I live in a rather insecure apartment building... we go where life takes us sometimes.

The apartment complex my hubby and I moved into when we first moved to Georgia was gated but, for nothing. It was broken 99% of the time we lived there. So, it wasn't any more safe than my ungated community that we live in now.
But, there are some nice communities/subdivisions around where we live that are gated and, we wouldn't mind living in a gate community now. In my current subdivision, we have a lake that only the residents are allowed to use and, because it isn't gated, people from outside of our subdivision come in a fish in our lake and play in our pool and enjoy the amenities that we pay $700 a year for while they pay nothing for it. It ticks us off. But, other than approaching them and possibly getting ourselves hurt in the process, there is nothing we can do about it. If we lived in a gated community, it would be much harder for these people to get in to mooch off of those of us who have earned the right to use that lake and our pool.
And, we have had vandals and house and car related break-ins and robberies. So, yes...I think a gated community might be safer. Assuming the community doesn't just gate the driveable entrance. If you gate and fence the entire surrounding area of the community, that is really the only way it will be marginally safer. Gate just the front where people drive in to enter the community and you will still get people who are willing to sneak in on foot.

Hello! Gated communities seem to be becoming more common these days, and I think I could go either way on them. If I could afford it, I would probably like to live in one, although more for the community aspects than the security necessarily. I live in a low-crime city, though, so I could see where security would be an issue in a more populated place.

i never have a chance to live in such a luxury complex before... the maintenance fee is just too high and my parents are not rich enough to buy a house in those areas that are guarded 24 hours by security guards in my country... but we are fortunate enough that nothing ever happen to our house as we believe that God is the head of our family and He will protect our house... even now in australia, we still don't live in such a place...

I think I've seen this movie or if not a similar one. Does it star John Ritter? Kind of curious now to know. If it is the one I'm thinking of it was very good.
I haven't lived in a gated community but I have known several who have. My grandmother used to, well it was gated at night only. During the day anyone could go in as they pleased but at night there was volunteer guard at the gate to check things. Anyone could leave, night or day, without being stopped.
I wouldn't mind living within one, as you pointed out it is a nice safety feature. The only problem I have is most gated communities seem to have a lot of restrictions on their owners. At least the ones around here do. They limit by age for one. Many don't pets or limit them while others do not allow certain vehicles to be driven by members. If I buy a house or a condo I should be able to decide things like that for myself.

I couldn't stand living in a place like that. I have seen that movie "The Colony", and would in no way want to be in that situation. I'm sure that the gated communities are not as bad as that movie portrayed, but still you lose all your freedoms and feel as though your watched constantly by everyone in the community and all eyes are just waiting for you to do something they don't like so they can kick you out.

OMG, I loved that movie. I was soooo freaked out when they surgically removed the dog's voice box without the owner's knowledge.
I've never lived in a gated community and I wouldn't want to. It's not anything except a quirk of mine. I live in a boat town, where everyone knows everyone and no body comes up our road without all the neighbors checking them out. I think that is just as good as a security guard at the gate. Furthermore, in my neighborhood, no one thinks there is anything to be had. In a gated community, I could fear that people would just be trying to figure out how to get in, since they would feel that is where the money is. Just my feeling; obviously not the feeling of most. One of my greatest fears is a home invasion. I could see this happening in a gated community before it happens in mine.

No, I would not move into a gated community. Most likely it would be more expensive, and I only rent medium ranged apartment complex units.
There are two communities a block from me that have gates in the parking area, but there are apartments that have direct access to the main road in front. I wonder if they are paying extra for the extra security on their back doors ...

Not me, I used to be a city girl ,but now I live in the country and most people here are wonderful. I have a big guard dog who takes care of the security problem.

Do they have 10 acres so I can go for a walk in the woods? Berry picking? land for growing veggies?
Maybe when I get so old that I can't defend myself and don't want to do any of those things. But I think I will die before that. So probably won't ever.

I am not sure if it would be that great or not.. It would be safer, unless you had a well to do criminal living among you.. But I do like my freedom and like my company to come and go as they please.. That would be a drawback for me..

although it sounds appealing to keep away robbery and such, it also sounds very restricting as well. And I often wonder if some of these places could lead into some kind of cult, maybe I am just overly cautious.

I used to think that a gated community would be safer than others but around here the crooks seem to get into these just as easy as any where else. Plus I keep seeing these places where the gates dont even work. Whats the point of that? I dont think I would really care to live in one cause it seems to be such an inconvient way of living.

Hi Twoey as much as it sounds a good idea I don't think I could go in one cos I'd miss what's happening on the outside-to me it would be like living in a nunnery for the rest of my life and commiting myself living in a colony that I may not get on in-
