My work collegues dog has fleas even though she treats regularly but is allergic to the bites. I suggested putting garlic into the dog food once a week as that is known to repel them and maybe use some citronella oil, she wants to use a natural product. Have you got any natural remedy ides that she could use because her dog is obviously in a lot of discomfort. Please share. Ellie :D

Don't give the dog garlic, it can be toxic! Adding apple cider vinegar to his water will work.

Garlic and onions is toxic to both dogs and cats. The apple cider vinegar would work on both animals.

Tansy - easilly found growing wild.. tansy naturally repels fleas
theres a plant, weed, herb, whatever it is.. called tansy. and it naturally repels fleas. ive seen cloth collars stuffed with the stuff at natural pet stores.. and have gathered the plant myself and put it under beds and carpets to keep them from my house. the stuff works wonders!

Thanks Tessah, Appreicate that I will share with her when I get to work. Thanks for uploading a pic of it too. I will also tell her to put around the house too as I think she was going to spend a fortune on a specialist clean and they maybe unecessary with using the tansy. Ellie :D

my home was infested with the little buggers so badly that i was scoping out exterminators to ake care of the problem.. my father in law dragged me out into the woods instead, and we gathered the tansy.. brought it home, and laid bunches of it under the rugs and under the beds.. worked like a charm.. and within a week, they were all gone, and i havent had a single one back since!!

you might try bathing him in a solution of vinegar and water, they don't like vinegar either. I have been plagued with flea bites going on three years now, this year I haven\t let my cat out and it seems to be better so far, I hope it stays that way.

Someone suggested cider vinegar in their drinking water so bathing in vinegar would work too on their coat. Thanks for sharing will let my work colleague know. Ellie:D

Brewers yeast mixed into the food can aid in removing fleas but you do have to watch for weight gain with it. I have used the garlic as well and it can work with dogs. You don't need much though. Another thing to try is go to a shop that sells cheap gem stone rocks. Pick up a amethyst rock, doesn't have to be huge at all. Put this in the drinking water. It won't harm the animals at all but gives the skin a nasty taste so the fleas don't like it. To help keep fleas away from the house try picking up eucalyptus branches. Use them for decoration but the smell deters fleas.

You're welcome. I had never heard of garlic being bad until tonight so I did a check. Some are saying it is but no one is very conclusive about it. Many companies sell garlic supplements for animals to help keep away fleas. Some say it's only raw garlic or spoiled garlic where as others say any form and then still others say it's fine. Use your best judgement on it. Just so you know the eucalyptus branches also ward off roaches. Nice benefit as well for it. Now I know some swear by Avon's Skin so Soft for washing a pet with to keep fleas a way. I tried this but my dog and I were both allergic. So again use your best judgement on it. Good luck

Thanks emeraldisle, I thought garlic as well but another response has said not to give as it can be toxic so I am really confused. Thanks for the tip re the amethyst I have by computer myself but never knew that to put into the water it could have that effect. I have some eucalytus oil but no branches but will try to pick some up as I have cats and I will pass all these tips onto my work collegue. Thank you so much for sharing, much appreciated. Ellie :D

Hi I have always used garlic myself but I was getting a lot of conflicting reports. I really appreciate you taking the time to look up the information and really appreciate it. Strange that you mention Avon Skin So Soft as I haven't sensitive skin but I cannot use this particular product as it brings me out in bliser type spots, weird huh. Ellie :D

Hi Littleowl, I have had varying opinions re the garlic even though I always thought it was ok someone else like you said to use and then someone else said not to as it was toxic to dogs and cats so I am very confused. I will forward all suggestions to my work colleague. Yes Frontline is so expensive. Cider vinegar was another suggestion that seems to have worked and also a plant called tansy. Thanks for sharing. Have you read the amethyst rock solution you'll love it, its in one of the earlier responses but just says to put amethyst into dogs water bowl, it doesn't harm them but the fleas hate it. Good one eh! Ellie :D

Here is a link to an article I wrote on natural flea control. Many of the previous posters have mentioned many of the same tips but you may find some more useful information there: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/758039/tips_for_natural_flea_control.html

A little bit of garlic everyday in the food should be fine as well as a bath with citronella oil mixed in with the shampoo. There is also a product available called Flea Free....it's an all natural product and sounds to be exactly what your work colleague is looking for.: http://www.healthyfoodforpets.com/index.htm

Hi MsTickle, Thanks very much for the link. I will forward it onto her. I use garlic and citronella for my cats but there was a really unusual response that I am going to try and that is to put an amethyst crystal into either the cats or dogs water bowl, it doesn't harm them but something from the crystal gets into their blood and makes them very undesirable to have a munch on for the fleas! I much prfer to use natural products on my animals. Thank yous for sharing. Ellie :D

I was at CostCo the other day and found a book on natural pet remedies. One of them was for a natural flea repellent. It's so simple! 1 Teaspoon dried rosemary or 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary 1 pint water Bring the water to a boil and add the leaves. Allow it to steep for a few minutes (I guess depending on how strong you want the "tea" to be. Then strain the leaves out of the brew and then you can either use it for a flea rinse on your animals or I would think that you could put it in a spray bottle and use it for a flea spray. I haven't had a chance to try it out, but will this afternoon. I have a neighbor who raises rosemary in their yard so it'll be easy to get some to try it out.

I think there are some essential oils that help keep fleas away! I use lavender oil and it works well! Look for a product at a health store for something natural that will work and not be poisonous either!

So I will forward these suggestions to my work collegue and she will be able to decide which to try. Thanks for sharing Olivemai. Ellie :D

I agre that the cider vinegar should work for both dogs and cats. Most dogs have cat fleas abyway as they are much more common and harder to eradicate. Just a few drops in the pts' drinking watr, not enough to make it taste unattractive to the dogs or cats, and it gets into their bloodstream and the fleas are repelled by it. Worked in our house, anyway, and we have both cat and dog!
