Are you a renter or an owner?

Right now we are renters, but I was taught that it's better to own a home because in my area it's cheaper to own than to rent, and you can make your living space yours, paint the walls without asking anyone... etc... What were you taught? Do you own or do you rent?

I own my house; I bought it when I was 29. There are good things and bad things about owning your own home. The bad thing is you are the only one responsible for it...you have to do all the repairs! Renting, you don't. Of course, when you rent, the landlord may not do the repairs, either! Overall, I think owning is better, though. At least you are spending money on something that is yours. When you are renting, you are giving someone else the money and it will never be yours. My family owned 3 different houses when I was growing up. So I guess that I learned it was important to own. My ex-husband's family never owned a home...they rented the same house for 30 years! The landlord eventually sold it to someone else and then they had to move. They also convinced my husband NOT to buy a house; something I hope he regrets now! lol

In my city it's too expensive to own a house, which cost 10 years income! So as a young worker I need to rent one first, through I like to own my house as quickly as possible.
