I recently purchased a used computer which had windows 98 installed on It. Which was working fine. I tried to Install windows XP on it to make it dual boot. I installed it successfully but when I started the PC after a few minutes the pc restarts and the window xp will never boot again. Although the windows 98 is working fine. Then I formated C drive and Tried only Windows Xp. The same problem appeared again. Now I am not able to operate as It has no operating system in It. Please help me out why windows Xp is not working on it although windows 98 is working fine.

What is your hdd size? Can XP be installed on it? If you just want XP now, just delete all the partitions & recreate them & install your XP OS on C. Like one of the guys mentioned, make sure your Win XP CD has no missing files / scratches so that everything essential will be copied.

The easiest way to do it is when you install your windows. It wil ask you where you would want to install it. You can create or delete partition from there. It will guide you step by step. And like you said, you better backup your stuff. Another way of doing it is go to Control PanelAdministrative ToolsComputer ManagementDisk Management. Since you said it's an old PC that you've bought, my advice is it's best to buy a new hdd as they are very cheap nowadays

Check if your Windows 98 is in D: drive or not. Because you can choose which partition you want to be booted. May be it requires you to install xp in d: drive.

If u dont want a dual system then try upgrading ur system to XP when installing XP. Use a different drive other than D: as it might have problem if u try joining two IDE hard drives.

First of all is your windows xp a proper release. Cause if you are installing modded winxp or burned versions there might be problems caused, because of improper cd-burning. Simply put - files might be missing. Is your computer within the requirement of winxp?? If it is not why not try win2000, so far it is the most stable windows i have used.

If u did use Win98 then ur PC is fine. Try using a bootable XP installation CD. Boot ur PC via CDROM u can do this by going to the Bios and changing the preference the first boot device and then u can boot and install XP. This should solve a problem. Try a different version of Win XP. There is Win XP with SP2 available.

When you installed windows xp and 98 did u got any option where you can select which os to load. If its not happened they change your boot.ini As now max pc are coming with pre installed xp why your dealer has given you win98. However use genuine windows xp version and format c drive and try to install still if its nor working then ask your dealer regarding this problem.

yo dude, i doubt having 5gb for system is enough. as xp boots up it will eat up about 256mb to 512mb of disc space just purely "painting" the UI and also some system background task. i would suppose that you try having more disc space and also get a original XP disc if your XP disc is not the original one. however, please ensure that your system is capable of upgrading to XP before you do that as when you keep on split the partition and/or formatting your harddisk you are actually shortening the lifespan of your harddisk.
