What is the best way to get sponsors for non-profit

Our church is going to have an on-line auction in the fall and we need sponsors for the event. I'm wondering if any of you have ever pursued sponsors for non-profit organizations and what worked best for you? We really need the financial support from this fund raiser so we want to find good sponsors at the $500, $250, and $150 levels. Advice?

Banks, and sometimes large chains like Wal-mart are good places to look for sponsors. You might get items to auction from places like wal-mart instead of money but any way of giving helps?
