Insulin Resistance

May 10, 2008 12:13pm CST
I have been diagnosed with insulin resistance around 6 months ago. Ever since I am trying to loose weight without any success. Anybody out here that have the same problem and what meds to you take for it as well as eating habits. Any help would be highly appreciated.

I do not know if I will be of any help, but I will tell you what I do. I will not east fast carbs at all. No sugar. I do not eat much meat. I try to eat fish instead. I make sure I get the good fat like olive oil and nuts and fish-oil. I make sure I get enough proteins. I get that from yoghurt, beans, lentils, fish, some egg and once in a while chicken. I now try out Metformin. I do not think it helps much, but I will have to give it a bit more time. My main problem is that I cannot excersise at all. I move very little. In order to combat insulin resistance I believe it is very important to build muscles and be active. It is a struggle. I will keep my eye on this discussion to see if you get good advice. I wish you luck.

Thank you very much. I try to stay away from any starches as well as sugars but with no luck on my side. I heard about Metformin. How do you take it? Can you purchase it over the counter? Is this the same as Glycophage? I do go for a couple of walks during the week as well as swimming up till last week on almost a daily basis. I hate gym so I won't even attempt it. I will also keep you posted if I here of anything that will really help.

Thanks! Yes it is the same as Glucophage. I take one tablet 500 mg right before breakfast. It measure my blood sugar level two hours later, and it strangely seems like my blood sugar is slowly getting higher. I do not understand it at all. I have not had much trouble staying away from sugar. I am really lucky i think, as I know many find that really hard. I do eat berries though. Raspberries are supposed to be a good choise. When I use frozen berries with youghurt it is almost like ice-cream I think. Now after a long time without sugar I think that refined sugar tastes far too sweet.

first of all, what did your doctor tell you or suggested that you eat? It's right to stay away from carb and replace it with protein..But if you're a rice person, try to limit it to half a cup only, because rice is a heavyweight when it comes to carbs and your body turns it into sugar that's why you have to lessen it or forget about it altogether.. I'm taking Metformin also but mine is 850mg, twice a day because my sugar the last I had an OGTT or glucose test, it was way over 300.. Search the net about metformin or glucophage, you will find that it will also help you to lose weight eventually.. I was 180lbs when I was diagnosed..I couldn't get pregnant again unless i trim down to 130lbs..Mind you, you may go to the bathroom more often just to dispose of what you have eaten last...this is one way of losing weight coz somehow you're also losing excess water in your body..but do drink after that..be patient, coz it will take sometime.. And dont forget to take your medicine and your diet coz if you do, mind my saying but you will regret it...if your insulin resistance gets worst, INJECTING insulin is the next stage..and it's expensive and you wouldn't like to inject yourself 3 times a day... My best suggestion, is search the net, there are a lot of very useful info bout your query...

Thank you very much for your information. This is the difficult part, I have seen so many different views on insulin resistance and that is very confusing. My doctor which diagnosed me is in my home country. He suggested that I go and see a dietician, which I did and she put me on a low GI diet. I have been following this to the tee and still not weight loss! Overhere, where we live, I can get Glucophage and feel like starting to drink it, but have no idea about the dosage. It is rather depressing. I also took a natural tablet called Diabetic Complex but had such bad side effects. It caused a feeling of depression just within the first hour after I took it. I first thought that I am now really loosing it, but had a chat to a pharmacist and it could be that one of the ingredients just didn't work with me for some bisarre reason! Oh well, think I am going to cut out all sort of carbs apart from fruit which I have in such moderation. I stick to an apple a day and when I feel like something sweet I take a pear. It is just driving me nuts that my whole life is revolving around what can I eat when! Thanks for your comment.

Hm, I know this discussion is already one year old, but I would love to know how you have been getting on in combatting your insulin resistance? I have to go back to the endocrinologist next week for confirmation but it looks very much as if I have the same problem, and I'm not all that sure where to start tackling it to be honest.
