Yes that's right, Grandpa Bob is going high tech after 18 years of being online. I finally broke down today (Saturday) and have signed up for broadband internet access. I have had AOL dial up for the qwhole 8 years and will feel lost without it and without the slowness etc. but I am sick of the time it takes for pics and all here with dial up. I'll be getting QWEST and it's a lifetime price locked in also and just a few dollars more than my dial up AOL. It will be 1.5 Mbps Sounds a lot faster than dialup anyhow. How does one go about changing emails in sites like mylot etc? Do you know if AOL will allow me to keep the same email address at all? Is it hard to install a broadband modem yourself? So many questions here. HELP!!

Hey AGB good for you! We have had broadband for years and would hate to go back to dial up! You should really go for wireless broadband then you could sit at your bonfire mylotting! I am sure you will be able to set up the modem ok - we did ours really easily! When do you make the big changeover! xxx

Oh wow. I had no idea you were still using dial up. You must be a very patient man! I remember the dial up years many moons ago, and I got so frustrated, not just by the slowness, but by being logged off. Which was usually when I was right in the middle of things. I look forward to hearing your perspective of the wonderful world of broadband.

Yup nearly 18 years with dialup here. I don't even have a cell phone and don't plan on it anytime soon. I guess I get frustrated and i do curse (loudly) at the puter when it bogs down really badly.

isnt that a coincidence?! lol just last night i was checking prices on getting broadband! and i think we will be going with QWEST also. in my area, its QWEST or Earthlink..and QWEST is a cheaper price (even if there isnt a super cheap intro price period lol)
we are going to have to wait until next month to do it, but man i cant wait! i dont even try to post photos anymore..i would get far too mad.
the modem and install kit were FREE with QWEST arent they?

You are not going high-tech, grandpa Bob. You are already on high-tech since you are already dabbling with your PC and on the internet. Where you used to walk, now you are going to run, so the only thing different is that things will happen faster and more efficiently for you when you leverage on the faster bandwidth. Installing the broadband modem shouldn't be too difficult because usually clear step-by-step instructions will be given with your subscription and new modem. Hope you enjoy your faster broadband access. Now you can download and watch movies, clips and videos better and smoother!!

Oh noooo! I don't like running. It is rough on my asthma.
So what all is entailed in installing the modem? I am sure it's not a just plug and play type deal.

Lol Grandpa Bob calm down
It is not hard to install the Modem I am blond and I did it lol
You should get a CD with it and it will tell you on there exactly what and how to do it
You should not have to change Emails or anything at all it should not affect it as it didn't me when I had to be on Dial up for a few weeks which I hated lol
As for aol yes you can keep it as all you have to do is put AOL Mail in your Browser and it will take you to sign in on your Mail
I hardly use my AOL Mail as it is rubbish I have gmail
The only thing that will be different is you are on Broadband and going faster nothing else will change on your Computer

They did say there would be an install CD and also a toll free number if I needed a tech to install it.
I won't have to pay for AOL and still have the email from them? I don't really wanna change addresses if possible is my concern. Thanks bunches.

Yes you can keep AOL Addy as I still have mine like I said just put Aol Mail in the Browser and it will bring it up for you to sign in
And honest Grandpa Bob the modem is easy to install I was worried to when I had to do it but it was well explained and easy as I said nothing else will change just your IP number but that is no concern

I think here in mylot you go to edit your profile, or edit your preferences, there should be a place to change your email.
As far as aol, I know you can keep the same one if you are using verizon now a friend of mind did but after that I do not know. You might have to change.

AOL is now a web based email so it's free and I'll be able to keep it. But I may go with a new one anyhow with the broadband hookup.

Mine was super easy to set up but it came from my local phone company and pretty much all I had to do was plug it into the phone jack, computer, and outlet. Hope you have it all set up by now and enjoying the fast speed. I sure do.

I am thinking that it can't be all that hard reallt. A modem is simple even if it's added to the insides of a puter. basically plug and run I hope.

Wow hi tech! That 20+ x your dialup speed, you'll feel the speed difference alright, especially when uploading pictures. I think AOL is a webmail just like yahoo so that will still be available, just not sure though. When it comes to your modem, your broadband service man will do it for you, and just as simple as plugging it in.

Good for you! I am going to redo my upstair this summer and move my office out of my bedroom into another room then switch to high speed. Will you let me know how it works out with Qwest? I have been struggling with the decision between cable or qwest...both have good deals...

I have heard bad things about Comcast etc. I do not have any cable outlets in the house and would have had to pay for installation of them for cable ISP serveice so QWest was it. I'll fill ya in around the weekend after I've been on a few days. I can't wait.

Congrats! Right now I am picking up a wireless connections so I am really happy about that, especially since I've been on that slow dial up as well.
I just did add my first pic to one of your discussions, having dial up is what kept me from adding pics before plus being short on time.
You shouldn't have any problem hooking up your broadband, it is usually pretty self explanitory.
As far as aol. You should be able to keep your aol email address, because aol is free now for email!

Wow, you were online posting all this time in slow mo????
I believe you can keep your AOL address, but if you want to change it, you can contact mylot about changing your e-mail address..As for installing the modem, are you telling me that they are not installing it for you? Time Warner installed ours and even when went change to digital phone, they made the correct changes that were needed..So as far as that goes, I don't know, because it was easy for me, other than having to wait on the guy..

They would install it but they charge $50 to do so. I have had dial up nearly 18 years and was very very patient with it. I wonder if I am one of the original dial up customers of AOL today? Hmmm?

Oh no, you should have waited until they have their special of free installation, then you wouldn't have to worry about it..Well, sorry I can't help you with that part, I am not mechanically inclined, I can use a computer or lawn mower, but when it comes to repairs or installations, forget it...

Grandpa, you can still use AOL and it will be free for you now that you have the broadband access.. You will just have to contact AOl and let them know that you have another service provider and they will quit charging you and you will not have to change anything.. I have used AOL for about 15 years now and we also have had Comcast for about 7 years.. When we had Comcast installed, we were told that I could still use AOL for just 9.99 a month as long as Comcast was my main service provider.. Then about a year of so ago, AOL changed and it was free for anyone who had a broadband internet provider.. So I have the convenience of High Speed and still get to use my AOL for free.. I haven't had to change anything.. I still have the same email address that I have had since getting on to AOL about 15 years ago.. My son is a "tekkie" or "computer nerd" and he hates AOL, he wants me to move on up to the newer providers, but I am a creature of habit and I fight against change and still use AOL, even with Comcast and Firefox readily available.. Good luck with your new provider, you will enjoy the speed and convenience of going "high tech" and no more of that old slow dial up..

I don't think that you will have to change anything, just keep you same Aol that you are using now, contact them and let them know that you have another service provider and they will quit charging you and you can use your Aol the same as ever.. The only difference after getting broadband was that I didn't have to pay Aol anymore, but everything else stayed the exact same.. I used the exact same program that I always used, I didn't have to change anything, didn't have to download anything, just used my Aol the same as I always did..

Welcome to the World of High Speed. I am sure you will enjoy this. I have been high speed for quite a few yrs. myself and cannot imagine anything else now. I Love being able to be online and move quickly thru pages here, and other sites online, and be able to do almost anything and not have to worry about it taking forever, especially when I am downloading something.
As for changing your Email address, etc. I am sure there are easy ways to do it on here just like other sites I have been on in the past. Just make sure you do so so there is no confusion, etc. and if interested, you can also go get you a FREE email address from Gmail.com which is a good place to use too. Wishing you the best.

Not getting a Plasma TV just an LCD HD one is all. That should be soon as the chesks are due from Sam soon. Mom is freaking. You know her and bills etc. She said she stresses so she left it to me and said be prepared for her freak fest soon if it isnt what we want nor expect. I am sick of the bills and all and with this combo package from QWest we will be paying about $30 or so less for it all and will have phone and internet at the same time. Shorty has a lot of friends already here now if she'd start talking. Guess that must be done LATE as well huh?

Ohmygoodness, Bob, you've been doing all this on DIALUP?
You deserve an award for sure!
No, installing a modem isn't hard at all, it's really no different than a regular dialup modem. I don't think you'll have any trouble.
As for changing email addresses, I think AOL started something a while back that allowed you to keep the address, I'm not sure. You should be able to find that at aol.com, though.
If I were you, I'd get a free web based email address (yahoo, gmail, etc) and use that for everything, that way you won't ever have to change it if you change internet providers, and you can check your mail from anywhere with an internet connection (friend's, library, airport, etc). I was with AOL for several years before switching to yahoo and I couldn't imagine going back.
