My pet rabbit attacked me!!!

We have a pet rabbit, a Mini-Lop-eared, we have had him for a year now, he is just over 12 months old. He is actually a pet for my kids and up until now he has been the perfect pet. He has never bitten any of us or shown any spiteful side until yesterday. I was hanging out my washing and as usual he was around my feet on the lawn. He often has a little game around our feet, he is a bit like a puppy dog. He started to sniff my right ankle and then he started nuzzling it. He then gave me a little nip, it didn't hurt but surprised me. He then started to go crazy weaving in and our between my feet and trying to bite my legs. I dropped my washing and ran to the house. I put the piece of board up at the conservatory door that we use to stop him coming in but he started to barge it with his head. My neighbour was watching by now and she was very surprsied to see his strange behaviour. He was going mad at the door, going back and forth trying to get in. All of a sudden he barged the board, got in and went for my leg, he bit it really hard, making two holes in my leg. I had to shake him off my leg but he just kept going for me. I ran to the kitchen and he still came after me biting my legs all the way. I ran outside and hopped on to the garden table. He stayed under the table, and each time I tried to get off he went for my legs. The neighbour had to come round and get him in her cat box so that I could get away. I have a nasty bite on my leg that is quite deep and bruised, it keeps bleeding each time I clean it. I know it sounds quite funny but it actually frightened me, he was behaving like some mad dog. Does anyone know anything about rabbits out there? Is he in season? Frisky? Mad? It was a very hot day yesterday could that have been anything to do with it? I am very reluctant to let him out of his hutch now especially with the kids around - who are now very scared of him because of this.

That is crazy. I have never heard of a bunny doing anything like that before. My uncle used to have a Cabbit (half cat half rabbit) and I remember being afraid of that because it wsa big and it would chase thier dog aroudn the yard, but I mean, that was a freak of nature, so you have ot expect it to act wierd. I would suggest that you take your bunny to the vet in case the wierd behavior is due to an under lying medical problem or something. Other than that all I can think to say is, was there a full moon that night? Sometimes animals act wierd when there is a full moon coming.

No, definitely no full moon last night. I went to Minor Injuries this afternoon to get it looked at but my tetanus is still valid so I should be ok. I reckon the person who gave the first response was quite right. The more I think about it the more it seems right. We have left him in his hutch all day because we were having a BBQ and I didn't want him going for anyone. He normally has the run of the garden but he is now grounded for the time being!!! I certainly don't feel comfortable around him now.

Oh my gosh! I never heard such a thing! Hope youare doing okay, We had a Dutch rabbit, had him for 13 years and he finally got old and so arthritic he couldn't even get up much less sit up straight so we had him put to sleep. Vet said he was in pain all the time, and we didn't want that for our little "child". but this bunny literally was a "child". He sat by my son while he did homework, he came when he was called and just like a little child! Had another Dutch that was quite similar behavior. NEver a mean second from either of them. This one we had for 9 years and he got bit by something and it got infected - it was under his belly so we didn't notice it until to late, but it was killing him, so we had him put to sleep. They say animals can "feel" earth movements and such for earthquakes and other weather issues - did you have anything like that that day? Or maybe he was just telling you he didn't like the fragrance of lotion you had on that day! Well, I say that jokingly, but maybe it could be true - he smelled something on you that riled him up. Did you ask a vet about him? Animals, ya love um, just can't understand them sometimes. Hope you are doing okay.

I know this was a while back, but how did things end up? The same scenario happened to me! Right down to hanging the wash and ending up on the table to get away! Did fixing your bunny help? We love our bunny, and she has always been so gentle before this.
