Read the Directions? Good Idea?

... or not?
I've been a member of Pogo.com for a while now but only recently started playing again (in between myLot!). I've been playing a lot of Mahjong Safari and I love it!
I've been stumbling along, making all my quick little animal matches and racking up those points and thought I was doing a bang-up job of it - until I read the directions last night.
I am ashamed to admit that I found out some wonderful new things, just by reading instead of going along my merry old way on my own.
I found that matching the stars is what gives you the powerups (I knew I saw little lightning bolts or something, but never stopped to look at what they did. And here I thought that the powerups just popped up at a certain time in the game!)
I found that matching two sets of animals in succession gives you lots more points. (i.e., match two kangaroos and then another two kangaroos before matching anything else).
I found that you get more points for the matches that are further away instead of those right next to each other.
Am I the only dunce that didn't know these things? Now my dilemna ...
I've always been pretty quick on making my matches, but now I find myself looking for the things that can potentially bring more points, therefore I am slowing down some and I'm not sure the extra points I might get are fully compensated for the lack of speed. So was my reading the directions worth it?
I play for fun and not really all that concerned about my points, but it is irritating to me that I didn't know this all along and could have been honing my skills properly and would probably be a master player by now (ha! Big chance of THAT happening, LOL).
So - do you always read the directions fully, with tips and tricks? If you're a pogo player, did you know all this stuff? (Someone please tell me you didn't know either, even if you have to lie - not!)

Directions...?
I don't play at Pogo, but I rarely start at the directions.
I just learned something new in Excel (that I told you about the other day) and my husband thought it was hysterical that I hadn't known that before. "You've been using Excel fr HOW long...? You're not much for experimenting with things are you?" rofl!!!
Had I read the help file, I could have saved myself a ton of time over the past years.
And, thank you, if you knew how to do it already, for being gracious enough to not laugh...lol.

Wow. I never read the directions. I love that game. I know that if you do not use your power ups you get more points, but I did not know the other stuff. I am now going to read the directions and the tips and tricks. I did get my badge in just a few hours of playing off and on. What is your pogo screen name? I will add you as my friend. Mine is sherrir101.

I really was amazed at what I found. I had figured out how to play the game on my own and thought I was hot stuff!
Little did I know, LOL ...

I like Mahjong a lot too and play it frequently... not on Pogo though. I did know that making two of the same sets in succession did bring more points. Not sure if all Mahjongs are the same as far as the directions go though... probably not. I usually do not read the directions, sad to say... only when I have trouble. I probably should though. Just never have. Even when trying to put something together, I usually wing it on my own at first and then look at the directions. Maybe it is to try to see how smart I really am... or maybe it is just because I am lazy! Who knows! LoL

I know it's pure laziness on my part!
I probably wouldn't feel that way about something important, but it's just a game, right?
Where else do you play mahjong? I'm always interested in finding a decent site.

I play Mah Jong Quest II on Shockwave.com. I joined as a member so I got to download it for free. But, you can download a free trial if you wanted to try it. I really like it because it allows you to play against people from all over the world. It ranks you as you play and your rank changes with your current skill level. The program plays you against random people with ranks similar to yours so that it is more fair. Others are not able to communicate with you in any way, just compete against you. I really like this version.
