Do you write in proper English on Mylot?

This crossed my mind just now. I was posting in another discussion and I was going to write "me and my dad" and I then analyzed the wording before I typed it and realized the correct thing to type would be "my dad and I"... I love to write my posts on any forum in full and I try often to write in proper English (though I am not the best with punctuation) So I was wondering , how many of you write in proper English on here? Now before anyone says anything...No, I don't have any problem if you write in chat speak or l33t in your posts. The is just a question directed to ask if you take the time to write in proper English on THIS site. Thank you.

I'm not a grammar conscious but i try to write good as possible. English is not my native language and for that mistakes in grammar and spelling are permissible... I think the significance of blogging is to be able to put up your brilliant ideas into writing. Is there a problem about it?

Yes I do, because I believe it shows apart of me. I want people to see that I am smart and that I did finish school.

Yeah, I was taught always to place the person whom we honor in the first place, like what you had mentioned “my dad and I “ or “my friend and I”. When writing response I always try to write sentences using proper English grammar and correct spelling but sometimes I still do it incorrectly. It’s lucky that all friends here understand what I am trying to express as what I have seen from their comments.

though I am not a native speaker of English, I try to do my best when making a post here on mylot. I don't think I am making meaningless or hard to understand posts at all but I sometimes find a few mistakes. Especially if the discussion is getting very hard and if I feel excited while writing the response, I might make some typos and grammatical and even vocabulary mistakes because when you are so excited and just trying to post everything you know about the situation, it becomes harder to co-ordinate your mind especially if you are not a native speaker. However, it is still very to be able to communicate with people from other side of the world. I am saying that because a majority is from the US but just hoping to see here as a more international place. I am not a grammer master but I really would like to get used to use more vocabulary in my sentences.

hi the_ruler, I think you are doing great considering you aren't a native English speaker. I have to say, native or not, when you are excited about a post it is easy to make mistakes cause the fingers cant keep up with the brain or the other way around. Happens to me alot and when I am re-reading my post I have alot of fixes to make in such situations!

hey roxanne :) I have just read my sentences again and found a mistake for example: However, it is still very"nice" to be able to communicate with people from other side of the world. In fact, this was what I wanted to say. I thought I said it like that but when I read the response again I saw I didn't! The same thing (and even more) applies for the discussion especially if the other person is in a very different state of mind. When talking about politics especially and trying to explain how the situation is going on and trying to overcome the assumptions made by others sometimes I get too excited and usually need to correct some of my statements by adding a few comments :D

I try to write in proper English on Mylot. One reason is that I don't live in a English-speaking country and I don't know that much oral English. Thus I just use what I learn to communicate with the others.

Hi! I dont notice it at all. I dont even mind the esfelings much less the grammers(LOL). I just type freely like I write freely whenever im writing. I jsut type whats on my mind and since mylot and most users doesnt/dont mind the spellings, the grammar, and proper english I dont spell check anymore. Sometimes I dont even preview my responses. I only spell check when the textbox is really bleeding red then I will correct some of them. I dont correct the 'dont's or 'wont's with "don'ts" or "won'ts" anymore. The other normal word I would not because im trying so hard to observe proper english but because maybe most of the words are incorrectly spelled that my post wont even make sense at all. Otherwise I dont mind and I dont care if theres a bit of red in teh text box as long as its still understandable, still makes sense and otehr users wont get a headache in reading and trying to make sense of them. I say or rather type whats on my mind and if it comes out not in proper order well then maybe thats how my mind thought of it.^_^

hi bjcyrix, I usually try to correct my spelling errors when I see red too. I know people don't seem to generally mind I guess it's just a habit with me. I don't preview my discussions either and do sometimes miss typos when I type a word and miss a letter and that missed letter word happens to be a real word!

I do try to write in proper English when making my posts; although, I am not the best at it. I am currently taking college courses and have to write many papers. Writing properly on here helps me with practice in writing proper English. You know what they say, "the more you practice, the better you are".

Hi angel, I agree that practice makes perfect and yes, writing on forums, etc do help improve your skills. Good lick with your college courses.

I try my best to write in proper English and to tell you a fact I get terribly upset when I have inadvertently made a spelling mistake or mistake in preposition . Initially I used to post the correction immediately but one fellow member's assurance that there is nothing significant in a typo between friends has made me look at these mistakes with resignation. After writing the discussion out I check it for mistakes by reading through what I have written but I still overlook some in my hurry to post it. I guess the best thing would be to transcribe it in MS word [as that valued friend suggested]and then check it out patiently before cutting it and pasting it. In any site I try my level best to write in proper English[even if it is in yahoo answers. But, I get less perturbed nowadays when I make some typing errors.

I would have also reacted the same way if I had written "me and my dad".

I am not sure if my grammar is correct in posting, discussing, or commenting. But i make it to a point that it will sound good to the ear when it is being read.

I write pretty much how I speak. I'm not the best one to look at when it goes to spelling. But as long as you can read this, then it should be good enough for most people :)

hi maliki, If i were to write how I speak...you wouldn't understand much. We Trinidadians speak in a broken type of slang. I do revert to speaking proper English though alot of times and it isn't hard for me to do so. I am just accustomed to it and sometimes do it without realizing cause I used to travel alot a few years back.

As a brand new member I have been browsing around a lot to see what mylot is really about. I am surprised to see that the writing is such high quality, in general. Unfortunately I feel that more and more people use the "sms-type" version of English in emails and everywhere. I really do not like when people write "4u" etc, and sometimes it is almost impossible to work out what is meant, unless you read it out loud. And I only speak from experience in Sweden, where it is bad enough even though English is not even out mother tounge. I can't imagine what it is like in the US etc..

Hi emiese, Welcome to Mylot! I have to agree that I kinda get annoyed at the chat speak and l33t at time and have a hard time working out some but I don;t mind if it;s just a few words If it;s the whole post and it's supposed to be a whole paragraph...oh boy! I remember reading somewhere last year in a news article that students tend to use chat speak in their assignments and they were thinking if to let some of the words slide...for example instead of "though" it'd be "tho" I like to use chat speak when I am IM'ing and it's still rare with me.

Hi, I try to use proper English in every discussions, responds and comments. I think that proper English can help other people to understand my responds, comments and discussions easily. I'm not sure whether I have grammar mistakes in my posts, I hope not. I my posts will have very less grammatical errors.

Try to write in proper English but sometimes it just take too much time to correct them. For me,as long as I can get the message across without too much errors, then it will do fine for me.I hope it will do fine for mylotters here as well.We are communicationg here, not taking some English class even though writing proper English does show u have a certain standings and not to mention can earn you more money.

so what if we write improper english, this is a democratic country, we may not be that fluent in speaking or writing,as long as you can express yourself and everyone understand it doesn't matter, nobody's perfect we just need to practice...
