Postage Increase

Today we are experiencing an increase in postage stamps. We still mail our bills because I am not certain how safe it is to pay bills online. It won't change our ways of paying monthly bills. Do you mail your bills and if so, will you stop because of the 1 cent increase or do you pay all your bills online?

I pay all of my bills online. But, I still send greeting cards to people and I have some 41 cent stamps so, I will need to go get some 1 cent stamps. And, I didn't start paying bills online. I think I have been paying bills online for around 9 or more years now. I just like that there is no way for my payment to get lost in the mail. And, it won't be late. And, if anything is late or lost, it isn't my fault. The bank has to take responsibility for it and, all I have to do is call my bank and have them talk to the company. Any trouble I would have gotten into is wiped clean. Also, I have had things stolen from my mail at home so, this way, I know that my check won't get stolen from my mailbox. So, I would say that doing it online is about equally as dangerous as sending payments via the mail. For one thing, less info actually goes out in the mail system. No one can forge my signature as they won't have a copy of it. Either way, I think you are equally at risk for danger from either method. Online is just more convenient.

Thanks so much for the good explanation. I do realize it's a risk to mail checks but still feel safer doing so. Either way can be risky.

I have been paying all my bills online since last year, and it has proven to be very convenient for me. So in this matter, the postage increase does not affect my bill paying. For a long time, I have balked at the idea of doing online banking. But since I've switched to it, I have never been late paying my bills and I don't have to worry about postage. It's definitely make that time of the month, billpaying that is, easier.

It is so much easier to pay bills online but I still have a problem with safety and won't do it. All sites are suppose to be secure but I don't trust them so I continue to pay by mail. Am anxious to see how many of us old folks continue to pay by snail mail. Thanks for responding.

I'll still be mailing my monthly bills. I wanted to get some sent off early but with Mother's Day weekend, that didn't happen. I still have a few Forever Stamps too. I wonder if the post office still has some for sale?

I believe the post office still sells forever stamps. Something was mentioned about it on the news recently. Thanks for responding.

I think they are on sale until sold out...not sure though. My mom was saying the price on them would go up too, but that doesn't make sense.

I bought a ton of the Forever stamps so no matter what the price of postage is, I can use them without having to add extra one or two cent stamps to them. The post office is saying that they are losing money but that is hardly the case. More and more people are buying things online and that means more packages - Priority mail is a complete joke because more often than not it gets shipped via a ground carrier. If you want to know where all the postal profits are going, look at the retirement packages that they are paying out.

I am certain the retirement packages are terrific. I can send a small package to one of our kids out of state and it will cost me around $14.00 each time I mail something. That's to assure it will get there in about 3 days or less. I find that to be rather costly. On the other hand, the carries deserve to be paid well when they are out there walking in the nasty weather all year. Thanks for responding.

I will still use the post office like normal. When gas goes up I suppose everything has to go up too and the post office is no different. I bought stamps last week before I knew about the increase but I had bought those forever stamps where they are still okay to use without extra postage.

The forever stamps sound like a good savings. My husband takes the bills to work and mails. He has a meter so it's easier for me not to have to go out and wait in long lines at the post office. Thanks for responding.

Hi carolbee, I do both - I pay online and by snail mail. and the reason for it is, if I'm getting to close to the due date I will pay online. If my due date is a little more then a week away, i will mail them. Everything is going up but the pay...lol It makes it hard to keep up! Have a good day!

Our bank account is not online so unless the utility companies or others sent me an email notification, I wouldn't know when the amount was taken from our checking account. Just something I've never set up. Thanks for responding.

Some banks charge to pay your bills online a small monthly fee. But no I don't pay any monthly bills online. Nor do I send them in if they are close enough to drive to pay them. I usually just run in and pay them while I am in town. I had heard that the postage was raising some but I didn't know about how much it raised by. Before we know it by 2010 atleast it will be 50ยข to mail something out.

With hackers on the rise and all that bad stuff just can't be to safe when it comes to your accounts online.

As everything increases in price, so did postage stamps. We do mail our bills because I am concerned about paying them online. Thanks for responding.

I pay all my bills online. It's very safe, and very convenient instead of sitting there writing out all those cheques. It's 52 cents here to mail a letter inside of Canada, so, I think it's more economical to do it online.

It is cheaper to pay bills online, I agree 100%. Seems there are more people who responded to this discussion who do their bill paying online. Thanks for responding.

I didn't realize there was an increase in the price of postage stamps...but one cent really doesn't seem like a big deal to me. Especially compared to gas prices! Gas prices are horrible! I pay my bills online. I have never had a problem with it...so far it's been easy and trustworthy. I think you should try it!

I'm just not comfortable paying bills online and my husband is not complaining about paying the postage. I never really know how secure each banking site really is even though the site is suppose to be secure. There always seems to be a hacker who is able to get into someone's personal stuff. Thanks so much for responding.

Yes they are at it again with the increases. I have some 41 cents stamps and had to buy a bunch of penny stamps because I still mail out certain bills. I tried to buy some "Forever Stamps" before the increase but they claim to have been out of them - yea right! I am sure they have them now on sale ofor42 cents, they think people are stupid.

No kidding about buying the forever stamps. The local news in our area was promoting them just the other day. Thanks for responding.

I have been paying my bills online for a long time. I have never had any problems and am quite comfortable with paying them that way. I do keep postage stamps in the house so that when I want to mail a card to a friend I have them handy. And as one of the other responses mentioned it is not surprising the increase in the price of the stamp because of the rise in the price of gasoline. So I will do as I always have done for quite some time and pay my bills online.

I've given some thought to paying our bills online but keep changing my mind and go back to the traditional mailing the bills. Thanks so much for responding.

I pay all my bills online thru my bank bill-pay feature. I haven't bought/used stamps in months.

Our kids pay all their bills online. I am just uncertain about it so we pay and mail the bills the old traditional way. Thanks for responding.

We started paying our bills online before the 41 cent increase, so this one doesn't bother me much in terms of reqular mail. However, I have an online business, and I mail a lot of packages for that. I haven't been to the post office since the postage change (been a slow week for sales), but I've got some packages to mail later in the week. I really haven't been able to take the time to comprehend all of the changes on mailing packages... they just changed it last year, and I was finally learning that system! :)

I bought a bunch of forever stamps. 100 of them. Some bills I pay online because it worked out better. Some bills I pay in person because that works out better. Some I pay by mail because that works out better. It just depends. 2 bills never worked out electronically, but I can pay in person. 2 bills by the time I get the money, no time for online, but I can send by mail. Sometimes I have to use overnight delivery which costs a lot more than just one cent more.

Overnight delivery is so costly. I send our out of state daughter things once in awhile and it generally runs about $14.00 for 2-3 day delivery. Smart idea to buy forever stamps. Thanks for responding.
