What do you think about link/referral exchanges?

As topic says, what do you thing about exchanging links and referrals? Is it good,bad? And why? I think its good as its a kind of revenue sharing concept and everyone get a profit out of it, offcourse excluding the exchanged site owners.

it would be even better if the other party kept his/her word too and stayed active, or actually keep in touch just in case. but I'd say that this by far is the most easiest way to get referrals rather than maybe joining those "ref sites".

i have not used any of these methods so i may not be able to say anything reasonable but i read some guys say it worked for them but i really dont understand how it works

It's great if both parties work just as hard as the other. Unfortunately, this isn't usually the case. I've just proposed a different kind of exchange that is fair to all so I hope to get a good response so I can start it up.

Everything has it's bad and good. Link exchanges is an effective way of bringing traffic to your web/blog or anything for free. Why not? And it's win-win situation for both side. You get what you want and I get what I want.
