is Linux good for gaming?

Have you ever tried using Linux for gaming? If so can you recommend the specific game that is compatible with linux.. How about NFS, is it compatible?

A knoppix live distro DVD has some arcade games, and for sure it support simple web base games. I really don't know if it support real heavy stuff games like multi players, I guest not. Because if it did linux would be so popular by this time.
